The Human Dignity Trust

The Human Dignity Trust We use the law to defend the human rights of LGBT people globally.

The Human Dignity Trust is a legal charity that supports local partners to uphold human rights and constitutional law in countries where private consensual s*xual conduct between adults of the same s*x is criminalised. We mobilise the intellectual resources of the international legal community in support of local actors who seek to use the courts to challenge laws that persecute people on the basi

s of their s*xual orientation and/or gender identity. Working with a network of more than twenty of the world’s largest law firms, we have helped local activists and civil society organisations across 5 continents access more than £8 million of pro bono technical legal assistance since 2011. We have supported litigation that has resulted in the decriminalisation of consensual same-s*x s*xual conduct, dropping of LGBT-related criminal charges, upholding of freedom of association rights for LGBT people, establishing that constitutional protections against discrimination include discrimination on grounds of s*xual orientation, and advancement of asylum laws in relation to LGBT persecution. We are led by the needs of local actors, providing them at their request sophisticated technical legal assistance. Our technical assistance includes comprehensive legal research and analyses, drafting of legal submissions and assistance to local counsel in preparing for court hearings, as well as complementary support for local communications and security strategies for those involved in litigation.

To kick off our campaign, we were proud to hold a celebratory event at Blackstone Chambers - a powerful reminder of the community of people who believe, as we do, that no one should face stigma, imprisonment, or violence simply for who they are or who they love.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and for all that you do in support of the Trust. We could not do this without you.

"I don't dare leave the house anymore, so I'm literally holed up inside. I double-lock all the doors and windows just to avoid being found." Reuters reports on the discrimination already being felt in Senegal by its LGBT+ community following the recent tightening of anti-LGBT+ legislation.

For Le***an Visibility Week, we asked le***an activists who partner with the Human Dignity Trust to share what this week means to them.

Rosanna Flamer-Caldera – Sri Lanka

'This year, Le***an Visibility Week is as important as ever given the surge in the anti-rights movement we are seeing across the world, including in my own country, Sri Lanka. Archaic penal codes and customs force le***ans into heteros*xual marriages where they are violated physically and mentally. And, four years after the CEDAW case, Rosanna Flamer-Caldera v Sri Lanka, our successive governments continue to stall on decriminalisation.

'Women's rights are in more danger now than ever. We must fight back – not just q***r women, but all women – because if one of us hurts, we all hurt!’

Rosanna Flamer-Caldera was the complainant in a case brought against Sri Lanka at the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women in 2022. The Committee ruled that the criminalisation of le***an and bis*xual women violates the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. She is the Executive Director of EQUAL GROUND, a Sri Lankan civil society organisation working towards equality for all s*xual orientations and gender identities, as well as human rights for everyone.

For Le***an Visibility Week, we asked two le***an activists who partner with the Human Dignity Trust to share what this week means to them.

Charrice Talbert and Simone Hill – Belize

'Le***an Visibility Week means being seen, heard, and valued, not just in moments, but in systems. It means our lives, our love, and our livelihoods matter.

At PETAL, we continue to push for the Equal Opportunities Bill because visibility must translate into protection, opportunity, and justice for all Belizean women.'

Charrice Talbert is the President and Simone Hill is the Founder of Promoting Empowerment Through Awareness For Les/Bi Women - PETAL, a civil society organisation in Belize working to achieve social, economic and gender justice for all women, especially le***an/ bis*xual women, through advocacy and empowerment.
