History is a natural subject for digital literacy because it teaches how knowledge is made, contested, evidenced, and communicated – the exact habits students need for navigating misinformation, manipulated media, and AI-generated content. It’s not too late to book for remaining sessions and recordings of our popular webinar series Historical Thinking in a Digital World to support you in building a shared understanding of digital literacy and then translate it into history curriculum planning, classroom routines, digital archive work, assessment approaches, and whole-school alignment.

What actually makes a history resource work in a primary classroom?

Not just “this kept them busy for 30 minutes”… but genuinely helped them learn something about the past.

In practice, the most useful resources often look quite simple:
– a carefully chosen story
– one really good image or object
– a question that gets children thinking

Because it’s not about how much we give pupils, it’s about how well it helps them make sense of the past.

And the best resources don’t do

all the work for you - they support you to adapt, tweak, and shape learning for your class and context.

What’s the most useful history resource you’ve used this term, and why did it work? We’d love to hear what’s made a difference in your classroom.

The UK’s SEND system has been under the spotlight. As numbers of students with SEND increase, attention has been given to how to best embed inclusive practice, enabling teachers to support all students to access high quality learning.
This on demand webinar series complements our current series Leading SEND Provision in Secondary History and explores aspects of historical learning that might pose problems to GCSE students and provide practical support to make history accessible to all learners at Key Stage 4.

Using historical sources well means helping children ask questions, make observations, and begin to understand how the past is constructed. Done thoughtfully, it moves learning beyond simply ‘looking at something old’ and into real historical thinking.

At the HA, we support teachers with practical approaches to this work - from using artefacts and images to spark curiosity, to helping pupils use sources as evidence to build interpretations.

If you’re looking for fresh ideas, our upcoming course on Practical approaches to teaching primary history explores exactly this, with hands-on strategies to develop enquiry, deepen understanding, and bring sources to life in the classroom.

This Volunteers’ Week we want to say a huge thank-you to all our wonderful volunteers. The Historical Association – now 120 years old – could not continue to exist and to provide ‘history of all, for all’ without you. ❤️

Volunteers form all of our committees and working groups, run our branches around the UK, organise historical talks and events, deliver CPD and short courses, speak at our annual conference, judge our competitions, write articles, edit our outstanding journals, and create high-quality learning resources. We are privileged to work with so many passionate and dedicated volunteers and we are deeply grateful to you all. 🙌
