Patient safety is fundamental to strong, compassionate healthcare leadership.

The HSJ Patient Safety Congress returns on 28–29 September 2026, bringing together NHS leaders, clinicians, safety specialists and patient voices to explore how we deliver safer care amid continued system pressure and change.

Taking place at the Telford International Centre, the congress will focus on practical improvement, shared learning and approaches that help reduce avoidable harm and improve quality across the health system.

Our patient safety session at conference was one of the most insightful and memorable discussions we had, highlighting just how powerful shared learning and lived experience can be, making this an event not to miss.

🔍 A valuable opportunity for leaders committed to embedding safety, learning and improvement in everyday practice.

In April, The King’s Fund published a report on environmental sustainability in the NHS 🌿

Commissioned by The Health Foundation, the report explores accountability arrangements for sustainability across the NHS in England, highlighting both strengths and areas for improvement.

🔑 Key leadership takeaways include:
- Leaders must prioritise sustainability as a core leadership responsibility, not a secondary concern
- Accountability cannot be strengthened solely through technocratic fixes – it also requires
effective leadership and communication
- National leadership sets the tone for local action to guide and align efforts across the NH

As the NHS continues its journey towards net zero, understanding how leadership and accountability can drive progress is key.

🌈 This Pride Month, we’re celebrating the progress, resilience and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community, while reflecting on the work still needed to achieve equity in leadership.

Inclusive medical leadership matters. When healthcare leaders create environments where people feel safe, respected, and valued, teams are stronger and patient care improves.

Last year, we spoke with FMLM member Professor Andrew Hartle, a consultant anaesthetist at St Mary’s (part of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust), and Professor of Practice in Anaesthesia at Imperial College London, about leading with pride and breaking down barriers in medical leadership.

The interview explores why visibility, allyship, and inclusive cultures matter in healthcare.

Our friends at HIL Health are hosting a conference: Decarbonising the NHS 2026

Achieving a net zero NHS is one of the defining leadership challenges of our time.

On 9 June 2026, senior leaders from across NHS trusts, ICBs and primary care will come together in London for The HIL Decarbonising the NHS Conference, to share progress, practical case studies and policy insight on building a more sustainable health system.

The event has a fantastic agenda planned, with a number of great speakers including a FMLM Clinical Fellow Jay Burt and Chris Gormley, NHS CSO.

The day will explore how leaders can:

- Progress made so far on the NHS net zero journey
- Case studies and evidence-based best practice
- How organisations can replicate successful models across the health system

This is a vital agenda for leaders at every level as we shape a more sustainable future for healthcare.

The GMC has launched its first comprehensive survey of LE and SAS doctors in seven years, and participation from across the profession is crucial.

The survey captures experiences of work, career progression, access to training and development, and will directly inform the GMC’s future review of medical education and training.

For LE and SAS doctors, this is a valuable opportunity to turn lived experience into evidence that can support better recognition, development opportunities and working conditions.

The more voices that take part, the more meaningful the outcomes.

The survey is open until Tuesday 2 June.
