Preparing the sunflowers’s seeds for April. PS If you know any additional local, sunny spot in the area where we could possibly plant sunflowers do let us know.

Story of a tree

Here it is! After a long wait, the new hawthorn has been planted yesterday by Street Trees for Living and Lewisham Council in our flower bed. We are really excited for this achievement, it’s a little, big thing for which we are proud.

When we moved here in Reaston Street, over 10 years ago, the flower beds in the pedestrian area were home to several silver birches. They were gourgeous. Sadly the draught of 2022 killed many of them, unexpectedly. After many attempts, in September last year (2024) we finally managed to replace the dead trees with new ones. Out of seven different new trees, the two eucalyptus didn’t survive… and the hawthorn planted yesterday replace one of them. It costed £395, which were funded through Hyde social value platform, by the contractor Churchill-hui.

Hopefully this new tree will grow strong and will bring joy to the many local residents, children and passers by.

Huge thanks to

I am really happy to share that our gardening club won - on the 1st October - the 2nd place at the “Lewisham In Bloom” competition, category “Best community garden”. I am so proud of this.

I have lent my name for the application, but it is a joint effort that we celebrate. This award belongs to both my neighbours and members of the gardening club, and Hyde Housing whose support has been crucial to enable us to look after the local flowerbeds and improve the area.

Our community garden and the love we put into it have really transformed the local pedestrian area. The flowerbeds now bring joy and colours to all passers-by. Not only this though. Issues such as fly tipping, dog waste and littering have drastically improved over the last couple of years. Finally there is now a sense of pride for the area, shown also by the fact that local residents and children use it regularly for all sort of things.

As part of the award, we won a bird box which we aim to install on one of the local trees, and a ÂŁ40 voucher to buy gardening items.

Thank you to Lewisham, thank you to all those who have contributed in a way or the other, to make this award a reality.

Thanks to our lovely neighbour Kathryn, we now have a beautiful “Little book stop” within the pedestrian area! As she said:

“The book stop is part of Penguin Books 90th birthday celebrations and we’re lucky to have been one of the 90 locations selected for this after thousands of people applied!
If you have any books to donate feel free to drop them into the book stop! And of course feel free to borrow a book too! Happy reading!!”

On Sunday 07th September, at playstreet, we plan to cut the ribbon and officially open it so please do come along from 2:00 pm onward! A local children’s author will come along too to celebrate the event.
