The Baytree Centre The Baytree Centre is a charity working with and empowering women and girls through education.

The Baytree Centre is a social inclusion charity based in the heart of Brixton. We work with and empower women and girls through education and skills development programmes. Baytree supports inner city families by creating pathways towards social inclusion that focus on education, training, employment, health and social support measures in order to enhance confidence and self esteem and to promote aspirations, community cohesion and cultural harmony. Adult Service:
ESOL, Literacy and Numeracy classes for women 18+

Youth Service:
Creative, active and fun clubs as well as academic support for girls aged 6-18
Support for newly arrived girls not in mainstream education (ESOL, Maths, Art, Cookery and activities that support cultural and social integration as well as mentoring to facilitate the school application process)

PEACH (Parents in the Education, Achievement and Character of their Children):
Personal and academic mentoring for girls
Mentoring and family enrichment sessions for mothers
Family activities

Recently at Baytree, we had a wonderful celebration! 🎉

Our ESOL learners passed their Pearson Speaking & Listening Exams, achieving certificates across Entry 1, 2 and 3.

It was so lovely to celebrate all the hard work, progress and achievements of our learners, as well as welcome back some familiar faces from the Entry 3 class, who have gone on to continue their studies at City College Stratford and Lambeth College.

Making time for each other matters.

Recent research from YoungMinds found that 92% of young people think it’s important for different generations to understand each other.

At Baytree, our Mother & Daughter activities give families the chance to spend quality time together, try something new and strengthen their connection. From seeing and crafts to trips and workshops, and our cookery and creative writing clubs new for this term.

Katie and her mother have taken part in our activities, sharing that her mother has now learned how to better understand and communicate with Katie, and she has often shared when she uses a strategy from the sessions, she sees her daughter respond with more trust and openness at home.

981,000 young people in the UK are NEET (not in education, employment or training) and in London, it’s almost 1 in 4.

But the numbers only tell half the story. When young people were asked what’s actually going wrong, 67% said school didn’t prepare them for work and 64% pointed to communication skills.

This is the gap that our Sparking Futures programme is working to close. We give young women aged 14+ what school may leave out. Confidence, real workplace exposure and practical skills.

35 years of Baytree 💜

For the last 35 years, we’ve been proud to stand alongside women and girls in our community, creating spaces to learn, grow and discover new opportunities.

This International Day of Charity, we’re celebrating the people, partnerships and supporters who have helped make our work possible, and the women and girls who continue to inspire us every day.

Today, most children went back to school. Some newly arrived girls didn’t, because they don’t have a place to go back to yet.

Waiting months for a school place is common, and it’s a long time to be out of education. It’s also a long time to be at home in a new country without a routine, without classmates, and without much reason to practice your English out loud. 📚

That’s what Arrive & Thrive is for. Girls aged 10 to 19 who are waiting for a place come to us for English classes, lessons to get them read for school, help with applications, and a mentor each.

It’s not a replacement for school. It’s a bridge, and the whole point is that they leave us for a classroom somewhere else.

A week away, and a lot changed.

Our girls spent a week at Cardfields in Essex on a residential with . There was laughter, new friendships and plenty of moments where they were nudged just outside their comfort zones.

The best part was watching that build over the week. Girls trying things they were nervous about, cheering each other on, and sitting down together at the end of each day to talk about how it had gone.

Meet Maimouna ⭐️

Maimouna came to Baytree as a graduate looking for support with her CV and finding employment, but found so much more.

Baytree has helped her to build confidence and develop professional skills, and is now a proud member of our Women’s Council supporting other women on their own journeys.
