Imperial Health Charity Raising funds to help improve patient experience at our hospitals We want to make healthcare better.

As a charity, we support medical research and improvements to patient care beyond that which can be achieved by NHS funding alone. Our aim is to use what past and present supporters have generously given to achieve great science, excellent patient care and a healthier community. For the past couple of months, we’ve been running weekly creative workshops for students at Pursuing Independent Paths (PiP), a wonderful charity that supports adults with learning disabilities and autism to achieve their goals and ambitions in life.

Our Community Group in Residence programme involves a 3 - 6 month partnership with a local organisation near one of our hospitals, supporting people who might experience barriers to healthcare.

This project aims to create links between PiP students and their local hospital, resulting in a collaborative visual artwork that will be displayed permanently at Hammersmith Hospital. During the project, two artists who are autistic or have a learning disability will also facilitate creative workshops for PiP students.

We’re lucky to have photographer Jon Rees capturing fantastic photographs of students participating in these sessions (pictured below).

We hope the project will raise awareness of PiP’s work while fostering a sense of ownership and connection to the hospital for participants.

Today we'd like to introduce you to Alex, who has been tirelessly raising funds for Ward 7 North at Charing Cross Hospital.

Last month, Alex travelled to North Wales and climbed Mount Snowdon not once but TWICE in one day, raising more than £650 to support improvements on the ward. 👏

Alex’s mother-in-law-to-be Beverley was admitted to the ward for an operation. While she was there, Alex, his friends and family saw first-hand the amazing care and support that Beverley received on Ward 7 North, and he wanted to raise some money as a way of saying thank you.

“I wanted to say thank you to the staff without just sending flowers that only last a couple a days, but something that could be implemented towards for a bigger, positive outcome.”

Thank you to Alex and a huge well done on this incredible feat!

As Volunteers’ Week draws to a close, we’d like to spotlight something we’re extremely proud of at Imperial Health Charity - our Volunteer Employability Programme.

The 10-week programme provides valuable learning opportunities alongside a hospital volunteering role, equipping volunteers with the skills and knowledge to secure quality work in the health and social care sector.

The programme supports CV writing, applications and preparation for job interviews, and allows volunteers to gain first-hand experience working with NHS staff.

Shahad is currently part of the Volunteer Employability Programme, and spoke about how useful her experience has been: "During my recent volunteer shifts, especially in the last week, I felt very happy. I truly enjoyed interacting with the patients as well as with the staff in the department — everyone was wonderful and very supportive!

“Volunteering with the NHS to help people and reduce their pain gives a strong sense of purpose, and reminds me that life can always be better as long as we support one another."

Thank you, Shahad, for brightening the days of patients and staff.

Four years ago today, Sue had a total hysterectomy. A few weeks later, she found out she'd had early stage ovarian cancer.

Thankfully, after further scans and examinations, she didn’t need any further treatment, only regular monitoring, which she still receives at Queen Charlotte's & Chelsea Hospital.

Following her experience, she decided to help our arts team transform the Gynaecology Outpatients department. Sue donated a portfolio of works, including one of her own pieces (pictured), and provided feedback and support to our arts team as they uplifted the space.

This , she shares a message with anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer: "Getting a cancer diagnosis, at any stage, is a total shock. Everyone’s journey is unique.

"I try to remember to be kind to myself and to be okay not feeling okay. Talking to someone really helped me; knowing you are not alone can help."

Thank you, Sue, for your contribution to our hospital, which has drastically improved the space for women receiving treatment.

Today we are spotlighting our exceptional Breastfeeding Peer Support Volunteers, who provide invaluable support to new parents by suggesting breastfeeding techniques and offering guidance and encouragement. 👩‍🍼💙

These volunteers are supported through learning to have the skills and knowledge to offer the best possible support, based on their training and their own personal experience.
We caught up with volunteer Iffy, who was a midwife before retiring, about her role helping new mums at Hammersmith Hospital:

“I find my volunteering role very relaxing and exciting! It gives me the opportunity to help midwifery colleagues and other staff on the Antenatal Clinic and Edith Dare postnatal ward, despite enjoying my retirement and comfortably looking after my grandchildren. It keeps me up to date with my midwifery profession.”

Thank you to Iffy and all our Breastfeeding Peer Support Volunteers!

Last night, we held our Volunteers' Thank You event at Bush Hall, where we marked the end of this year's Volunteers' Week by celebrating the enormous difference our volunteers make to our patients, staff and visitors.

We celebrated volunteers by giving out length of service and Make a Difference awards, which recognise the incredible impact the recipients have made in supporting our hospitals. The evening also offered food, drinks and some fabulous live music!

Supporting people with dementia is so important, and the research project MinderCare has been doing amazing work helping people living with the disease gain more independence at home, with support from our volunteers.

MinderCare monitors people living dementia, offering remote, at-home monitoring that provides specialist support. In addition to regular visits from clinical staff to ensure their needs are being met, our check-in and chat volunteers call these patients once a week over the phone with the aim of improving their wellbeing. The volunteers chat with them about things the clinical and research staff don't cover and build a relationship with them.
One of our volunteers, Amanda, said of her role:

“I enjoy my volunteering role because it allows me to build my communication skills and after every shift I feel a sense of accomplishment knowing I might have made someone’s day brighter!”

These volunteers make such a difference to people living with dementia, reducing isolation and keeping them engaged, as well as encouraging them to keep participating in the research 💙

A huge thank you to all our incredible check-in and chat volunteers!

We’d like to spotlight our partner organisation One Westminster, a local voluntary sector infrastructure in the borough of Westminster.

One Westminster supports individuals with learning disabilities and helps them find volunteering opportunities that are suited for them. We partnered with One Westminster to offer bespoke support to our volunteers, tailoring some of our existing volunteering roles to make them more accessible for people with learning disabilities.

Daniel, who started volunteering through One Westminster, said “I enjoy giving lunches to the patients and talking to them when I can see they’re lonely. I also feel safe when I’m volunteering in the wards”.

Our volunteering responder programme is one of the most varied roles we offer!

Based at Charing Cross Hospital, these volunteers act in a responsive capacity depending on the demand within the hospital during their shift. This can be anything from collecting blood samples, supporting patients through shopping tasks or engaging patients in rehabilitation exercise classes.

We spoke to responder volunteer Salva about her role:

“Long hospital stays can be a lonely and tedious experience for many patients, regardless of whether they have family and friends visiting. A simple outing to enjoy the outdoors and breathe in fresh, crisp air can do a lot to recharge the mind and keep patients focused on positive things.

“Taking patients off wards to give them an afternoon escape quickly became one of my favourite tasks as a responder volunteer. It gives me the opportunity to build relationships with patients, listen to their stories and hopefully make them happy.”

Thank you to Salva and all our tireless responder volunteers for all that you do!
