The Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance (WPCA) is a global action network focusing exclusively on hospice and palliative care development worldwide. Its members are national and regional hospice and palliative care organisations and affiliate organisations supporting hospice and palliative care. Our vision is a world with universal access to hospice and palliative care.

At least 10% of the global need for palliative care involves children.
Over 80% of those children live in low- and middle-income countries where pain medicines in child-appropriate formulations are rarely available, and specialist paediatric palliative care barely exists.
A child in pain deserves relief as urgently as any adult. Age is never a reason to wait.
This , we are calling for paediatric palliative care to be seen, funded, and integrated into national health systems everywhere.

Did you know that over 5.5 billion people live in countries with little or no access to controlled medicines for pain management?
Morphine, one of the most effective tools for relieving pain in palliative care, is affordable, widely manufactured, and on the WHO Essential Medicines List. Yet for most of the world, it remains out of reach.
This is not a supply problem. It is a policy problem.
On , we are calling on governments to act to review the policies that stand between patients and pain relief, and to make palliative care a real part of every national health system.

Today is World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2026. 🌍
This year, we are talking about something that touches every family, every community, and every corner of the world: pain management.
Pain relief is not optional. It is not a luxury. It is the most basic promise of care, and for too many people around the world, that promise is still broken.
Over 20 million people die every year in unnecessary pain. Not because we lack the medicines. Not because we lack the knowledge. But because systems, policies, and stigma continue to stand between patients and the relief they deserve.
On this day, we stand together: patients, families, caregivers, health workers, advocates, and policymakers to say: enough.
Join us. Share your story. Raise your voice. And help us build a world where no one dies in preventable pain.

It's here: the third edition of the Global Atlas of Palliative Care, launched today at the 50th Montréal International Palliative Care Congress.
An estimated 73.5 million people need palliative care every year. Only about 14% of that need is met by specialised palliative care services. In low- and middle-income countries, only 4% of people in need receive it.
There is progress. Between 2017 and 2025, specialised services grew from approximately 25,000 to 33,720, and the number of patients served rose from almost 7 million to over 10.4 million.
On Wednesday we asked you three true-or-false questions. The Atlas shows all three are false:
• 62.4% of people in need require palliative care before their last year of life.
• Non-communicable diseases account for 73.6% of adult need.
• 10.6 million children need palliative care.
Tomorrow is World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, focused on pain management. The Atlas finds that 80% of the world's population has little or no access to essential controlled medicines.

Tomorrow we launch the third edition of the Global Atlas of Palliative Care.
In 2014, the World Health Assembly passed resolution WHA67.19, calling on countries to strengthen palliative care as part of comprehensive care throughout the life course. The Atlas helps us see how far the world has come since then, and how far there is still to go.
And on Saturday 10 October, join us for World Hospice and Palliative Care Day. This year's theme is "Pain Management: An Essential Part of Palliative Care".
