🌈 40 DAYS. 40 STORIES. ONE GRAND DAME. 🌈

THE SWISS HOTEL

Before she was Compton’s…

There was The Swiss Hotel.

And just look at her. ❤️

Standing proudly at 51–53 Old Compton Street, this magnificent Victorian building was designed by W. A. Williams and Hopton and built in 1890. So grand was the design that it was exhibited at the Royal Academy that same year.

But buildings like this don't simply witness history…

They collect it.

And this particular old lady seems to have collected some rather fabulous company.

As the years passed, The Swiss became The Swiss Tavern, and by the middle of the 20th century it had developed a reputation for being “not entirely straight.” 🌈

In a time when being openly q***r could be dangerous — and homosexuality between men was still illegal — a reputation like that mattered.

It meant people knew.

It meant certain people felt comfortable enough to walk through those doors.

And among the characters associated with The Swiss were some extraordinary names from Britain's literary and cultural world.

Dylan Thomas.
Brian Howard.

Writers. Bohemians. Outsiders. Q***r characters who belonged to a Soho where the rules were often a little more flexible than elsewhere.

And did you know there's the wonderfully chaotic tale of Dylan Thomas…

In 1953, the original manuscript of Under Milk Wood somehow found its way into the Swiss Tavern. When Thomas's producer, Douglas Cleverdon, went looking for it, the manuscript was found behind the bar — the barmaid simply producing the rather battered folder when asked whether anyone had found a script belonging to Dylan Thomas.

Imagine that.

One of the most important literary manuscripts of the 20th century… sitting behind the bar at The Swiss. 🍻📖

And perhaps that tells us something about this building better than any date ever could.

For generations, The Swiss was a place where stories happened.

Artists. Writers. Characters.
Q***r lives.
Late nights.
Secrets.
Friendships.

And, occasionally, a masterpiece left behind after a night at the pub. 😉

Before there was Comptons...

Before the famous red frontage.
Before the central bar.
Before the Top Bar.
Before the drag, the DJs, the dancing and all those questionable decisions after midnight... 😉

There was simply 51–53 Old Compton Street.

And its story goes back much further than 40 years.

Long before we became the Comptons you know today, this little corner of Soho had already lived several lives — and gathered a LOT of stories along the way.

So, as we count down to our 40th birthday, we're going right back to the beginning.

For the next 40 days, we're going to uncover the people, the places, the music, the characters, the community and the history that made Comptons...

Some stories you might know.

Some you definitely won't.

And some may even bring back a memory of your own...
