We are a membership organisation of women dedicated to supporting the development of girls and young women and the achievement of their equal rights and opportunities. Women continue to face challenges in everyday life that have too often gone unspoken.

Join us for an important conversation exploring women’s experiences in the running community, highlighting the realities they face simply by taking part in the sport they love.

Led by Samantha, Ambassador for Girls Friendly Society (GFS), this event is part of a wider series focused on empowering women and girls through honest conversation, visibility, and action.

Together, we’ll hear powerful stories, raise awareness of what’s happening on our streets, and inspire change, encouraging girls to stand up for themselves and challenge limiting stereotypes.
At GFS, this is what empowerment looks like, building confidence, raising voices, and supporting girls to believe in their potential.

🌍 To mark World Environment Day, we're celebrating GFS girls, like the girls of GFS Aigburth who came together earlier this year to help care for their local environment with a community litter pick around the Aigburth and Riverside area of Liverpool.

In total:
• 20 girls took part
• 5 volunteers supported the session
• 10 full bags of rubbish were collected! ♻️

The group decided to organise the litter pick following Earth Day, wanting to take positive action and make a difference in their community, something they also enjoyed doing last year.

The girls loved spending time outdoors, hearing positive feedback from members of the public and seeing the impact they could make together.

It was a brilliant opportunity to step away from the hall, connect with their community and protect the environment at the same time 💚

A huge thank you to St Michael’s and Lark Lane Wombles for kindly loaning the equipment and helping make the day possible.

We're delighted to celebrate one of our incredible volunteers, Stacey, who has received a well-deserved Room to Reward in recognition of her outstanding contribution to GFS Manchester City Centre. 💜

Stacey is an invaluable member of our volunteer team, consistently going above and beyond to make every session engaging, welcoming and meaningful for the girls she supports. Whether she's bringing creative new activity ideas, sourcing extra resources, or simply offering a listening ear, Stacey's positivity and enthusiasm shine through in everything she does.

What makes Stacey especially inspiring is her openness and authenticity. By sharing her experiences of living with ADHD, she has helped create a safe and supportive environment where girls feel comfortable discussing their own challenges and disabilities. Her honesty has empowered many young people to build confidence, self-belief and a stronger sense of self.

The girls absolutely adore Stacey – and when she can't make a session, they're always asking when she'll be back. There is no clearer testament to the difference she makes.

Thank you, Stacey, for your dedication, kindness and commitment to helping girls and young women thrive. We couldn't be more grateful, and we're thrilled to see your hard work recognised through Room to Reward.

Please join us in congratulating Stacey in the comments below! 🎉

Today, we're celebrating the amazing volunteers who help make GFS a place where girls and young women can thrive.

Volunteers are at the heart of what we do at GFS. Whether they're leading group activities, supporting events, serving as trustees or helping behind the scenes, their dedication makes a real difference to girls' lives.

Over the last year:

⭐ 260 volunteers actively contributed to GFS groups and governance
⭐ 84 new volunteers joined our community
⭐ We achieved a fantastic 92% volunteer retention rate

These achievements are only possible because of the commitment, kindness and passion of our volunteer community.

To every GFS volunteer, past and present: thank you for helping us build a better world for girls and young women. 💜

This Volunteers’ Week, we want to celebrate the incredible people who give their time, energy and care to support girls and young women across England and Wales, with GFS 💙

Our fantastic team of volunteers are at the heart of all that we do:
✨ Running weekly community groups
✨ Supporting trips and events
✨ Creating safe spaces where girls can build the confidence, friendships and resilience they need to really, truly thrive!

Many of our volunteers have been part of the GFS community for years, with some even returning to volunteer after attending GFS as girls themselves. Their passion, kindness and dedication help make GFS a place where girls know they belong.

To every GFS volunteer, past and present:
💞 Thank you for the difference you make every single day. We simply couldn’t do it without you.

Girls today are growing up in a world where sexism, online harm and pressure around appearance are affecting their confidence, wellbeing and opportunities.

At GFS, we believe every girl deserves to feel heard, valued and supported.

Our latest Annual Report shares the impact we made together this year – supporting more than 1,500 girls and young women through community groups, school workshops, trips and events focused on wellbeing, relationships, confidence and opportunity.

As we mark 150 years of GFS, we’re proud of how far we’ve come. We're determined to keep amplifying girls’ voices for the future.

Why are trips and new experiences an important part of addressing inequality? Because they introduce children to:

💫 New possibilities
💡 New thoughts and idea
👩‍🦽New role models and different people
🧗‍♀️New hobbies and activities - giving them a more rounded view of what they like and dislike
👩‍🏫 New subjects to pursue in school - like music, botany or computer science.
👩‍🎓 New options for future careers

Children should never be limited by their economic background of life's circumstances. We believe in giving girls the tools they need to really unlock !

🚨 Applications for the GFS 2027 are now OPEN! 👟💜

We’re looking for someone amazing to take on the iconic London Marathon while raising funds to support girls and young women across GFS.

This year, GFS secured our very first official marathon place, and our incredible 2026 runner Izzy Johnson showed what an unforgettable journey it can be — from training runs and fundraising to crossing the finish line for a cause she deeply believes in ✨

Now it’s your turn.

If you or someone you know would love to take on this challenge while helping girls build confidence, friendship and self-belief, we’d love to hear from you.
