Certitude’s Shared Lives Carers come from all walks of life, so we asked our carers to share what made them consider the career change. A surprising amount joined after being a foster carer.

As part of Shared Lives week, we asked them to share the reasons they decided to make the switch to supporting adults. Here are some of their answers.

This Learning Disability Week, we’re celebrating Gavin from Essex and the life he is building on his terms.

Gavin’s week is full of the things he loves. On Mondays, he’s at The Rock It Club, meeting new people and getting involved in a range of activities from arts and crafts to music evenings. Whether it’s the disco or a themed night, he’s always keen to get involved – most recently dressing as a cowboy for a Country & Western evening.

Tuesdays are spent at ACL Essex, where Gavin is working towards a future in hospitality and catering. He loves cooking, trying new recipes, and is a real talent in the kitchen.

On Wednesdays, he attends an employability course, building his confidence and developing his CV as he works towards a local job in hospitality or catering.

Thursdays take him back to college for Maths and English, with English his favourite thanks to his love of reading. When he’s not studying, he enjoys spending time with his partner Jake.

Fridays (and Sundays!) are spent volunteering at the St Helena Hospice shop, where he’s been a dedicated volunteer for three months. From steaming and tagging clothes to stacking shelves, he’s a valued part of the team.

Gavin also keeps close to family, regularly seeing his mum and dad nearby, and on Saturdays you’ll find him at drama class. Recently he took to the stage with his dance partner to perform a routine to ABBA’s Take a Chance on Me as part of their Diamond Show.

Gavin’s week isn’t just busy, it’s built around his goals, relationships, and ambitions.
At Certitude, we believe everyone should be supported to live the life they want and be seen for their brilliance. With the right support, Gavin is doing just that!

For our final story of Carers Week, we’re proud to share Derek Whitaker’s journey.

Derek, our Treat Me Right Quality Check Coordinator, began his caring journey when his wife’s health changed unexpectedly. Overnight, the life they knew shifted, and together they had to relearn how to navigate the world.

Derek describes how caring reshaped not only his daily routines but also his understanding of love, patience and what truly matters.

Derek credits flexible working and the support of the Unpaid Carers Network for helping him feel understood and less alone. His biggest piece of advice is simple: try to see the world from the perspective of the person you care for.

Derek’s story reminds us that caring is part of real life, and it deserves recognition and support.

Seema Sharma, Fundraising and Corporate Partnerships Manager, reflects on what it means to support a parent through a life limiting condition, shared as part of our Carers Week series.

In October 2024, Seema’s world changed overnight when her father was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). A man who once trained daily and bench pressed 200kg suddenly found himself unable to move, breathe or function as he once had. What followed were months of uncertainty, emergency hospital visits, endless appointments and the devastating reality of a life limiting diagnosis.

For Seema, becoming a carer wasn’t a choice. She has balanced caring for her father with raising her young family, managing a home, and giving her all at work. She describes caring as “love, grief, fear and strength - all happening at once.”

At Certitude, we are proud to support colleagues with caring responsibilities through our Carers Network, flexible working and carers leave. Seema’s story reinforces why understanding, compassion and practical support matter.
