She wrote an opera performed at the Met before most orchestras would even program a woman. She also went to prison for the right to vote — and got her fellow inmates singing her anthem from a jail cell, toothbrush in hand as a baton.

History mostly remembers Ethel Smyth as "the suffragette composer," like the two things were separate. They weren't. The same defiance that got her into Leipzig against her father's wishes is the defiance that got her into Holloway Prison decades later.

Jessica Bejarano received countless rejections throughout her career, constantly being told that someone from her background didn't belong at the front of an orchestra.

Instead of letting those doors closed in her face define her, she turned every single no into the fuel that built her own path, ultimately founding the San Francisco Civic Philharmonic to lead on her own terms.

Her journey is a powerful reminder that we urgently need more women shaping the music world, especially on the conductor's podium where female voices are still far too rare.

In 1968, an album made history: the first platinum classical record ever, three Grammys, over three years at No. 1 on the charts. Nobody knew a woman had made it.

Wendy Carlos was transitioning in secret while Switched-On Bach turned her into a phenomenon almost overnight. Terrified of being seen, she disguised herself as a man. It took eleven years for her to finally tell the world who she really was.

Today, at 86, Carlos lives quietly and almost entirely out of the public eye. She hasn't released new music since 2005. But she never disappeared: for years she ran her own website, http://wendycarlos.com , writing candidly about her life, her music, and her other great passion: chasing solar eclipses around the world.
