UKRAINE IS NOT LOSING - RUSSIA IS NOT WINNING
Anne Applebaum’s recent article in The Atlantic (7/6/26), discusses the how war in Ukraine is changing
She writes “many people have understood that the Russian narrative is wrong: The Ukrainians are not losing. The Russians are not winning, and more important, they don’t know how to win”. There are three parts to “a momentum shift that changes everything”
(1) THE GROUND WAR
The “front line” is now a no-go zone for russian soldiers. Ukrainian drone forces are removing more russian soldiers from the battlefield than can be recruited to replace them, some 30,000 a month. Good riddance to bad rubbish I say!
(2) THE LONG RANGE WAR
russia uses missiles and drones to kill Ukrainian civilians and destroy civilian infrastructure. However, russian air defence is ineffective. Ukraine’s long-range drones target russian oil and gas infrastructure, reducing russian refining capacity by at least 20 percent
Almost all major oil refineries in central Russia ‌have halted or scaled back production, and some have been hit more than once. Great to see how effective Ukraine’s sanctions are!
(3) THE PSYCHOLOGICAL WAR
russia said Ukraine would fall in three days and when that didn’t happen, russian victory was inevitable. People have seen with their own eyes, the black smoke rising not just in in St Petersburg, but across the country
Indeed, Kyrill Budanov, head of the Ukrainian president’s office, said there’s a lot of evidence that russians realise state propaganda is full of lies: “They cannot understand why they have to keep fighting and why they are getting hit now, because they were told they were going to win and Ukraine is nothing”
HERE’S WHAT I THINK
The article talks about signs that some in Moscow are preparing for the war to end, selling it to russians as a victory
Well, I’ll believe the war will end when I see it
Until then, Ukraine should keep hitting russia hard. I say make russia burn, so their people realise it’s Putin’s vanity and ego causing this destruction

On Sunday, 7th June, Ukrainians and friends of Ukraine gathered in London to honour the memory of the victims of the Kakhovka Dam tragedy.
The destruction of the dam on 6 June 2023 claimed lives, destroyed thousands of homes, and caused irreversible damage to southern Ukraine’s environment.
We remember. We continue to speak about this tragedy. And we will not let the world forget 🇺🇦🕯️

Чи знали ви, що трагедія на Каховській ГЕС сталася 6 червня 2023 року, рівно через 79 років після D-Day, висадки союзників у Нормандії 6 червня 1944 року?

Did you know that the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam took place on 6 June 2023, exactly 79 years after D-Day, when Allied forces landed in Normandy on 6 June 1944?

Today, we remember the Kakhovka tragedy - a disaster that changed countless lives in a matter of hours.

3 years when the Kakhovka Dam was destroyed, millions of cubic meters of water surged across southern Ukraine, flooding dozens of communities and forcing thousands of people to flee their homes. Entire neighborhoods disappeared beneath the water. Families lost loved ones, homes, livelihoods, and cherished memories built over generations.

Beyond the human tragedy, the environmental damage was immense. Vast areas of farmland were devastated, wildlife habitats were destroyed, and millions of people faced long-term consequences from the loss of a critical water source.

Behind every statistic is a human story - a family waiting for help, a child forced to leave home, an elderly person watching a lifetime of memories washed away.

Three years later, the pain remains. Today, we honor the victims, stand with the survivors, and remember that tragedies of this scale leave wounds that cannot be measured by numbers alone.

ELVIS WAS RIGHT – A LITTLE LESS CONVERSATION, A LITTLE MORE ACTION PLEASE

With russia’s increasingly brutal attacks on Ukrainian civilians, I’m, reminded of Elvis Presley’s song – “A little less conversation”, because Ukraine needs action, not words!

WHAT’S HAPPENING

The war is starting to slip away from russia. Ukraine’s successes in recent months include taking back territory from russia; deep strikes on russia’s oil infrastructure; russian supply routes to Crimea becoming cut off; russian casualties that outnumber the number of soldiers it can recruit; economic dislocation and unsustainable budget deficits

BRUTAL RUSSIAN ATTACKS ON UKRAINE

russia can’t succeed on the battlefield, so it’s decided to respond by massive attacks on Ukrainian civilians. Whilst Ukraine is successfully neutralising the vast majority (94%+) of drones, ballistic missiles are harder to intercept. So russia is now attacking innocent Ukrainian civilians with mass volleys of missiles to cause as much death and destruction as it can

WHY HAS THIS BECOME “THE NEW NORMAL”?

Whilst reports of these mass attacks appear in the news, people here have become immune to the horror and human cost of these attacks. Mass attacks by russia, bringing death and destruction evoke little reaction, because they’re so commonplace. That’s simply awful

ELVIS SAID - A LITTLE MORE BITE AND A LITTLE LESS BARK

Instead of just condemning russia, Ukraine needs practical help – NOW!

russia needs to feel bite, not just listen to bark

Olena Tregub in the Atlantic Council writes “Ukraine still needs the advanced weapons that only its Western partners can provide. This means modern air defence systems, cruise and ballistic missiles, and fighter jets…While progress has been made in this direction, Europe is still not doing enough”

HERE’S WHAT I THINK

Tregub is right when she writes “Ukraine is now Europe’s shield” – but it’s innocent Ukrainian civilians who are bearing the brunt of the West’s lack of pace and action

Remember - russia only respects force and action

The West must step up to help protect Ukraine and its civilians, so that russia feels the West’s bite, not just it’s bark
