Norwegian and Scandinavian History and Heritage in the British Isles – CALL FOR PAPERS DEADLINE 15 May, 12:00 am
The conference will take place on 6–7 October at the Norwegian Church Arts Centre, Cardiff Bay. The conference will be open to the public free of charge.
Since December 2023, the team at the Norwegian Church Arts Centre has been working on the National Lottery Heritage Fund–supported Norwegian Church Heritage Research and Outreach Project. As part of this project, the team has researched heritage relating to Norwegians in South Wales and elsewhere in the United Kingdom.
As the project comes to an end in November 2026, we are pleased to announce a conference connected to this work under the theme:
We invite proposals from academics, community historians, heritage professionals, public historians, GLAM-sector professionals, family historians, and members of the public with an interest in the conference theme.
Presentations may take the form of individual papers, panel sessions, lightning talks, creative panels, or other formats. We are also open to innovative and experimental proposals for conference activities that engage with the theme in new ways.
Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
Viking heritage and Norse culture
Representations of Vikings and Scandinavians in popular culture and modern British culture
Heathenry in modern Britain
Migration and settlement patterns of Norwegian and Scandinavian peoples in the British Isles
Scandinavian communities in the British Isles during wartime (e.g. the World Wars)
Trade networks between Scandinavia and the British Isles
Scandinavian religious institutions in the United Kingdom
Historical Norwegian and Scandinavian communities in the British Isles
Contemporary Norwegian and Scandinavian communities in the British Isles
Transnational connections between Norway and the United Kingdom in historical and contemporary contexts
Scandinavian involvement in British industries (shipping, fishing, mining, engineering, timber, etc.)
Family histories and genealogies
Public history and heritage projects

We also welcome proposals on any other topics related to the conference’s overarching theme.
Please submit an abstract of 300 words to [email protected] by 15 May.
Subject to the level of interest and the suitability of submitted contributions, we aim to publish the conference proceedings in an edited collection.
This conference is made possible through funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and we thank National Lottery players for their support.
