Eddie Rider 1933-2025
Worked at RPH 5th January 1949 until 11th April 1996.
Eddie started as at The Regent Palace Hotel as a 16 year old page boy he worked in the cloakroom, as a keyman, working on reception checking people out, night porter, luggage porter, hall porter and finally leaving in 1996 when he finished his distinguished career as Head Hall Porter. He did also a few shifts as a doorman. This was a role usually given to stockier members of staff and the coats were always a bit roomy for Eddie!
During his time there, he dealt with many incidents - fires in laundry cupboards, rowdy rugby crowds, many famous people, sudden deaths of customers to name but a few. He also had to act on big sporting occasions as an extra Security Officer manning the entrance to the hotel.
He was remembered by many members of staff for his kindness and willingness to help he was always a friendly face for young members of staff living away from home for the first time and living in central London. Eddie was a unique character and unusually for a man in his nineties was an activate Facebook member and for many ex Regent “Palacer’s “ (as he used to call them) he was a strong link to their past. People always have a good word to say about Eddie – there are so many lovely comments on the RPH FB group about him.
His knowledge of London was simply amazing and in particular he knew nearly every bus and underground routes He could tell you what bus to catch to get you from anywhere to anywhere in London - right down to where it stopped, and landmarks to look for on the way .
Eddie was the last of the famous four Hall Porters along with Cam Campbell, Derek Varrant, and George Good, they were legends in their own right.
