Chain of Hope

Chain of Hope It is estimated that as many as 15 million children die or remain severely ill every year through potentially treatable or preventable cardiac diseases.

Chain of Hope exists to provide children affected by life-threatening heart disease with the treatment to which they very often simply do not have access, by developing sustainable cardiac centres where they are most needed. Chain of Hope was established in 1996 under the initiative of Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub, OM, FRS, with the aim of providing children suffering from life threatening heart dis

ease with the corrective surgery and treatment to which they do not have access. Chain of Hope is an international children’s charity that links people and companies together to help children with heart disease in developing and war-torn countries to get the care that they desperately need. Linking volunteer medical teams, host families and supporters, we work together to treat children in urgent need and to build up local cardiac services through training, provision of equipment and specialised support. We help children with heart disease both by transporting them to partnering hospitals for urgent treatment and by building up cardiac services in developing countries so that future generations will have access to the treatment they need locally. With your help we can save even more children's lives. Chain of Hope is a registered charity in the UK No. 1081384 and a limited company No. 3933420

Meet four-year-old Elijah 👋❤️

Back in June, Elijah’s life changed forever when our medical volunteer team travelled for a life-saving mission to Jamaica in partnership with Gift of Life International and Chain of Hope Jamaica to treat children suffering with heart disease.

Elijah was born with a complex heart condition and underwent a resection of a discrete subaortic membrane, performed by Chain of Hope Trustee Professor Victor Tsang and local cardiac surgeon Dr Sherard Little.

Thanks to their expertise, alongside our incredible medical volunteers and the dedicated local cardiac team, Elijah is now looking forward to a healthier future where one day he hopes to become a firefighter.

This mission marked our 30th year of mending little hearts in Jamaica, a milestone that holds even more meaning as we celebrate 30 years of Chain of Hope.

But there are still so many children like Elijah waiting for the chance to live the healthy, happy lives like they deserve.

That’s why this September, we’re asking YOU to take on our 30 for 30 challenge. 👀

Choose your challenge and take it on for 30 days. Walk, run, cycle, swim, hit the gym, give something up or get creative and make it your own!

Every challenge, every mile and every pound raised can help us reach more children in need of life-saving cardiac care.

Do it for Elijah. Do it for the many little hearts still waiting to be mended. ❤️

Congratulations to Ms Carin Van Doorn OBE, who has received her OBE at Windsor Castle in recognition of her outstanding philanthropy and leadership in paediatric cardiac surgery.

Carin played an instrumental role in establishing the cardiac surgical unit at the Aswan Heart Centre in 2009. Working alongside our Founder, Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub FRS OM, she helped mentor and train local surgeons, supporting the development of a world-class cardiac programme that continues to transform children’s lives.

Over the past 20 years, Carin has also led numerous surgical teaching missions with Chain of Hope across Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia, sharing her expertise and helping to strengthen life-saving cardiac services for children around the world.
