JCWI has campaigned for justice in immigration, nationality & asylum law since 1967. We undertake policy work, campaigning and direct legal advice and assistance on asylum and immigration matters. The purpose of this page is to provide information about JCWI's work and discussion about asylum and immigration issues. JCWI cannot give legal advice through this page. If you are looking for

legal advice on an immigration matter, please email [email protected] or call our office on 0207 251 8708. Nothing on this page should be relied upon as a substitute for legal advice from a qualified solicitor regarding any actual legal issue or dispute. Since its inception in 1967 JCWI has helped many thousands of individuals and families who have been affected by the unfairness of British immigration and nationality law and policy. JCWI strives to influence major debates in this sphere with a view to eliminating discrimination.

This week, we came together with our community as part of Refugee Week.

We shared food, organised and took part in a collaborative climate justice workshop, and watched Mahdi Fleifel’s powerful documentary on Palestinian displacement, memory, resistance and survival.

At a time when the world is becoming increasingly hostile to people on the move, we are creating spaces of solidarity, and seeking to strengthen our collective knowledge and power.

See you at the next one.
And tomorrow, we will be at the Day of Action to break the border, starting at 2pm in Bedford Square, Central London.

As then Minister for Immigration, Robert Jenrick was at the head of a Victorian-era fascistic system responsible for the cruel detention and death from diphtheria of Hussein Haseeb Ahmed.

Hussein, like hundreds of others, came here seeking safety, but instead was imprisoned in camps fit for neither humans nor animals.

Robert Jenrick showed no accountability for this horrific incident, and now seeks to return to government, shapeshifting from Tory to Reform, but bringing the same racism, fascism and inhumane governing record.

In September 2024 the then home secretary, Yvette Cooper, decided to downgrade Cleverly’s inquiry from statutory to independent, meaning it has fewer powers to compel witnesses to attend. This Labour government is also complicit in the failure to bring justice to those accountable.

JCWI warmly invites you to join us for a community potluck and film screening on Wednesday 17 June at 6pm, as part of Islington Refugee Week.

This year’s Refugee Week theme is Courage — and at a time when migrants, refugees and our communities continue to face hostility and division, we want to create space to come together, share food, stories and solidarity.

The event will take place in Islington N1, closest station Caledonian Road & Barnsbury. The exact location will be shared after registration. We’ll be screening the powerful 2012 documentary A World Not Ours by Palestinian director Mahdi Fleifel.

The film follows the lives of Mahdi’s family and friends in Ain El-Helweh, a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon where he spent much of his childhood before his family settled in Denmark. Through years of video diaries and conversations, Fleifel offers a deeply personal and unfiltered portrait of displacement, memory, resistance and survival.

Organise community defence NOW. This is not an isolated incident. Attacks on racialised communities are happening all across Britain.

Join or your local Anti-Raids network. Reach out and protect your racialised neighbours. Organise local spaces of mutual support. Mobilise in numbers to confront and block fascists on the streets.

We need personal connection and real life organising to defeat a global far right funded and resourced by billionaires.

Our Executive Director, Lavanya Pallapi:

"This violence against racialised people, particularly Muslims and migrants, has been fanned by government, media and the state, funded by corporate actors and billionaires.

The active participation of governments in the normalisation of fascist and racist violence means it is up to communities and individuals to keep us safe.

At this time, we must:

- Organise community defence

- Provide material solidarity offering shelter and support to racialised groups under attack

- Build Antiraids networks

- Call out and oppose state complicity

We support local groups such as End Deportations Belfast, Anaka Collective, Participation and the Practice of Rights, Community Action Tenants Union, Law Centre Northern Ireland and national community organising efforts mobilising locally such as Anti-Racist Movement and Anti Raids Network."
