🌱 Restoring Tanzania’s native forests, one species at a time!

Tanzania has pledged to restore 5.2 million hectares of degraded land by 2030 under the Bonn Challenge. With 1,763 native tree species, the country has an incredible opportunity to make restoration work for both people and biodiversity.
Over the past two years, BGCI has been implementing the Darwin Innovation Initiative Biodiversity Challenge Funds funded project “Diversifying Tanzania’s Native Tree Species Portfolio for People and Biodiversity.”
Through the project BGCI, together with the partners TFS Tanzania Forest Services Agency, TTGAU, ECHO ECHO East Africa Impact Center and Migombani Botanical Garden, has been working to:

🌳 Prioritise over-exploited and threatened native tree species
🌱 Strengthen the availability of native tree seeds and seedlings for restoration
🤝 Build knowledge and capacity for native tree species restoration
📜 Address policy and practical barriers to increasing the use of native trees at scale

By diversifying Tanzania’s restoration portfolio, the project contributed to increasing the availability of native tree species seedlings and support more effective restoration and planting initiatives. Native trees are key to restoring Tanzania’s landscapes—and ensuring that restoration benefits both people and biodiversity.

🌵 We are delighted to welcome Chester Zoo as the newest Action Partner of the Illegal Plant Trade Coalition (IPTC)!

has been doing incredible work to protect threatened plant species, including their recent conservation expedition to Chile’s Atacama Desert. Working alongside Chilean partners to collect and safeguard seeds from endangered Copiapoa cacti.

Their work highlights the importance of collaboration, scientific expertise, and practical action to protect some of the world’s most threatened plants.

We are excited to welcome Chester Zoo to the IPTC and look forward to working together to address the illegal plant trade and strengthen global plant conservation.

Naples Botanical Garden is pleased to announce Dr. Emily E.D. Coffey as the Garden's next President & Chief Executive Officer. After a thoughtful six-month search, the Garden appointed Dr. Coffey to the role, which she’ll begin in October. Dr. Coffey joins us from the Atlanta Botanical Garden, where she serves as Vice President of Conservation & Research.

Throughout her career, she has advanced plant conservation, scientific research, and the protection of rare and imperiled species while leading multidisciplinary teams, fostering collaborative partnerships, and championing the role of public gardens in conservation.

“Naples Botanical Garden is a rare place where world-class conservation and world-class beauty exist side by side, and it's already proven what's possible when conservation, horticulture, and education work together," said Dr. Coffey. 🌿 BGCI at CITES Plants Committee 28 (PC28), Geneva

BGCI was pleased to participate in the 28th meeting of the (PC28) as an accredited non-governmental observer. Representing BGCI were Dr Carly Cowell, Secretary-General, and Dr Laxmi Aggarwal, Conservation Policy Manager, who engaged with Parties, experts, and partners to advance plant conservation and sustainable trade. BGCI presented two Information Documents highlighting practical solutions to strengthen the implementation of CITES.

📄 Information Document 11 showcases BGCI's Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund (IWTCF) project, developed in partnership with Forest Research Institute of Ghana (FORIG), Missouri Botanical Garden Central Africa Programme (Gabon), the IUCN Species Survival Commission Madagascar Plant Specialist Group (MPSG) and University of Antananarivo. The document introduces a three-step Data Collection Protocol to support the preparation of robust Non-Detriment Findings (NDFs) and IUCN Red List assessments for threatened timber species by identifying potential inaccessible data sources and providing guidance on targeted field data collection.

📄 Information Document 12 highlights the important role of botanic gardens as trusted conservation institutions and proposes consideration of a simplified CITES framework for the non-commercial transfer of threatened plants between accredited botanic gardens. The paper demonstrates how accredited botanic gardens maintain high standards of traceability, biosecurity, and regulatory compliance while facilitating essential conservation action.

These contributions reflect BGCI's commitment to supporting science-based decision-making, strengthening international collaboration, and ensuring the protection of threatened plant species while enabling effective conservation.

Earlier this year, BGCI launched the Declaration of Intent on Climate Action Education which outlines seven commitments that all cultural institutions can make to address climate change challenges through education and community impact.

Join The Climate Toolkit (hosted by Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens) and us on Wednesday 12 August (4pm BST / 11am EDT), to learn about the formation of the Declaration and the seven key goals for climate action education, and to hear a case study from Museum of the Earth at the Paleontological Research Institution about how a museum can actively put these goals into practice.

This webinar (hosted by Society For Ecological Restoration (SER)) introduces The Global Biodiversity Standard (TGBS) Mentoring Programme, a capacity-building initiative designed to help ecosystem restoration practitioners strengthen biodiversity outcomes and improve project quality. The programme is distinct from TGBS independent assessment and certification. It offers practical guidance to help practitioners manage risk in project design, strengthen biodiversity outcomes, and apply best practices across a range of restoration contexts.

The session will explore how the programme supports practitioners in project design, implementation, monitoring, and adaptive management, while building capacity for future biodiversity certification where appropriate. By supporting stronger practice and continuous improvement, the TGBS Mentoring Programme contributes to more credible, resilient, and ecologically appropriate restoration in support of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
