Today (12 June 2026) is the very first International Day of Botanic Garden Education (IDBGE) and we (BGCI and 국립수목원(Korea National Arboretum)) are inviting botanic gardens and arboreta around the world to celebrate this day with us.

This year’s day is aligned with BGCI’s Declaration of Intent on Climate Action Education which is a commitment our network makes to contribute to key climate action targets.

We'll be sharing stories from across our network throughout today, follow along and share your own stories

🌱 To celebrate the first International Day of Botanic Garden Education (12 June), we are highlighting inspiring activities from botanic gardens worldwide. Here is an example from Australia!

The Plant Science Learning Hub

Created by educators and scientists at the Australian National Botanic Gardens, the Plant Science Learning Hub (PSLH) is a free online platform providing educators with scientifically accurate resources to teach students about plant science in the Australian context.

The PSLH is aligned with the Australian Curriculum for primary school grades 4 - 6, and includes interactive online components, fun outdoor activities, and supporting materials for teachers including lesson plans and background information. All activities are designed to be adaptable to any environment – be that a schoolyard, backyard, local park, or nature reserve.

Extensive audience research has been key to the project’s success. We conducted workshops with teachers and classroom groups from metropolitan, regional and rural areas across Australia, gaining insights into teaching and learning styles and preferences and identifying key inclusions. We worked directly with experts including scientists, horticulturists and educators to make sure all the activities and information on the platform were scientifically accurate and fit for purpose.

In 2023 we launched our first four learning modules: Lifecycles, Plant Structures, Pollination and Seeds. Further modules are currently in development as we work towards our goal of bringing Australian plant science – and botanic gardens — into classrooms right across Australia!

The Plant Science Learning Hub is freely accessible at https://learn.anbg.gov.au/
Thank you to the Australian National Botanic Gardens for sharing this with us!

🌱 To celebrate the first International Day of Botanic Garden Education (12 June), we would like to highlight different activities that our gardens worldwide are doing! Here is an example from Brazil:

Learning from the Earth: a school garden as a pedagogical practice in environmental and food education

Through a partnership between the Poços de Caldas Botanical Garden Foundation and a local early childhood school, children explored nature through hands-on learning, play, and discovery.

The project engaged 20 children aged 1–5, alongside teachers and families, in activities designed to strengthen environmental awareness, healthy eating habits, and meaningful connections with nature. Activities included:

🌿 Teacher training
🌿 Interactive discussions with children
🌿 Planting and sensory experiences
🌿 Educational visits to the botanical garden
🌿 Harvesting and food preparation activities

The school garden became a living classroom where children learned about plant diversity, food origins, and caring for the environment through direct contact with soil, seeds, and plants.

The project resulted in strong engagement, increased environmental awareness, and the development of healthier habits among children. The garden became a living learning space and continues to be integrated into daily school routines, supporting ongoing learning and connection with nature. This experience also contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 3, 4, and 15) and has been systematised in a scientific article recently published in the Brazilian Journal of Environmental Education (RevBEA).
This initiative highlights the important role botanic gardens can play in supporting schools and communities in sustainability education! 🌍💚

Obrigado à Fundação Jardim Botânico de Poços de Caldas por compartilhar esta maravilhosa atividade conosco!

🌳 To recover endangered species, invest in plants 🌱

The Endangered Species Act is working for plants to a degree that it isn’t — yet — working for wildlife. By prioritizing plant recovery, we can produce record recovery numbers and reveal critical lessons for recovering other species cheaper and with less conflict.
