October is Black History Month.

This year's theme, Honouring Our Communities, is about recognising the people whose contributions sustain a community and often go unacknowledged.

For the Sickle Cell Society that history is not abstract. This charity exists because families affected by sickle cell organised to create it. The specialist care that exists today exists because people built it, often without institutional backing.

Throughout October we'll be marking that — and looking at what still needs to change.

🩸 “People in the Black community really do need to donate blood.”

Shorna lives with sickle cell disorder and knows how important access to the right blood can be for people who need transfusions.

Currently, just 3% of blood donors are of Black heritage, yet Black heritage donors are more likely to have the Ro blood type needed to treat many people living with sickle cell.

This Sickle Cell Awareness Month, we’re working with Give Blood Spread Love to encourage more people from the Black community to consider becoming blood donors.

Every new donor can make a difference and help ensure blood is available when someone needs it. ❤️

There are just 2 days left to submit evidence to the APPG on Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia as part of its inquiry into improving sickle cell and thalassaemia services.

We want to hear from people living with sickle cell or thalassaemia, families and carers, healthcare professionals, researchers, health system leaders and relevant organisations.

Your experience can help shape future sickle cell treatments.

The Sickle Cell Society is joining the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America and the Sickle Cell Disease Association of Canada in the Sickle Cell Voices Alliance to host “Sickle Cell Disease Voices Shaping Change”.

This virtual meeting is an opportunity for people living with sickle cell, families and caregivers to share what matters most to them. You can contribute through live testimony, audience polls or written comments. Your perspectives will inform a report shared with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other key stakeholders to help shape future research and treatment development.

🩸 A blood donation can be more than a donation – it can give someone more time with the people they love.

Portia, 32, lives with sickle cell disorder and receives red cell exchange treatment using donated blood. For Portia, every bag represents a person who chose to give blood to someone they may never meet.

This Sickle Cell Awareness Month, we’re working with Give Blood Spread Love to highlight the difference blood donors can make to people living with sickle cell.

As Portia says, donors have given her another chance to be healthy and spend precious time with her family. ❤️

🧡 Knowing your status matters.

Taiwo lives with sickle cell disorder, while her twin sister does not. Both of their parents have sickle cell trait – a reminder of how inheritance can differ, even within the same family.

When Taiwo was planning her own family, she also learned that assumptions about who may carry a haemoglobin gene variant can mean people don’t always think about testing.

This Sickle Cell Awareness Month, we’re encouraging everyone to understand their status and make informed choices about their health and future.

Expressions of interest are now open for one of our four charity places in the 2027 TCS London Marathon!

We’re looking for committed runners who are ready to take on both the challenge of marathon training and raising a minimum of £3,500 to support people affected by sickle cell.

🧡 Someone who gets it, because they’ve been through it.

This Sickle Cell Awareness Month, we’re shining a light on our Youth Mentoring Programme and the difference peer support can make for young people living with sickle cell.

With over 300 referrals, our mentors provide young people with someone who understands, offering support, encouragement and a space to talk openly about the challenges they may face.

And the programme is growing. What began in London now reaches young people in Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield, as we continue working to expand our support even further.

👉 Referrals are always open, and we’re always looking for more mentors to join our London team. New roles will also be opening soon.
