2026 Nobel Prize in Medicine recognises pioneers of optogenetics

Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel have been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries involving light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.

Their pioneering research has transformed neuroscience and opened new possibilities in ophthalmology, where optogenetic approaches are being investigated as potential treatments to restore visual function in patients with visual impairment.

Could accommodative function help identify children at greater risk of myopia progression during orthokeratology treatment?

A retrospective study of 49 children found that lower monocular accommodative amplitude and facility at baseline were associated with greater axial elongation over two years.

The findings are preliminary, but suggest accommodative testing could provide useful additional information when monitoring myopia control.
