Strabismus in 2026: Beyond Alignment Angle Measurement and Muscle Surgery

How is the diagnosis and management of strabismus evolving?

Session 3 of the WSPOS Subspecialty Day 2026 looks beyond traditional approaches to explore new technologies, techniques and treatment strategies in strabismus.

The session will cover:

👁️ “Smart” eye movement recordings for diagnosing ocular motility disorders
🧠 Updated concepts in innervational disorders
💉 Botulinum toxin as an alternative to incisional surgery
🔬 Enhanced recovery, suture materials and strategies to reduce infection and scarring
💡 Bupivacaine injection in horizontal strabismus, alone and in combination with botulinum toxin

Moderated by Damien Yeo (UK) and Elisabeth de Smit (UK), with perspectives and research from an international faculty.

🧬 First human trial of gene-silencing therapy launched for Bardet-Biedl syndrome

A first-in-human trial is evaluating a gene-silencing therapy for retinal degeneration associated with Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS), a rare inherited disorder in which vision loss can become apparent during childhood.

The investigational treatment targets disease associated with mutations in the BBS10 gene.
