Abbey Gardens is a community garden open to all visitors, based in West Ham, London. It surrounds the ruins of a 12th century abbey. Registered Charity 1158147

Abbey Gardens is a community garden and park with local history: it surrounds the remains of the gatehouse of Stratford Langthorne Abbey. It’s different from an allotment: we grow and harvest food and flowers together at our free, drop-in gardening sessions on Tuesdays 1pm-3pm, Thursdays 4pm-7pm and Saturdays 11am-4pm. New gardeners are always welcome, no experience necessary, tools and gloves are

provided. We also run sessions with local schools, health organisations and corporate volunteers. We only harvest at our gardening sessions: at the end of each session, we share what we’ve harvested. But it isn’t all about gardening: Abbey Gardens is run by and for the local community by Friends of Abbey Gardens, a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, with a small board of Trustees from the garden’s founding group and wider community of interest. Friends of Abbey Gardens has monthly planning meetings which are open to anyone interested to get involved behind the scenes or hear the latest news. And we have volunteers who help with tech, maintenance, social media, graphic design, blogging, event setup and stallholding, finance and the many other jobs that help the garden to thrive. The garden is open to visitors every day from dawn to dusk. We hold regular community events and we often take part in The Big Lunch and Open Garden Squares Weekend.

Let’s Get Growing at Abbey Gardens!

Spring is just around the corner, and we can’t wait to get our hands back in the soil! Starting this April, we’re throwing open the gates for our community gardening sessions every Wednesday and Sunday from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
Whether you’re a seasoned green thumb or have never held a trowel in your life, you are so welcome here. It’s a wonderful way to soak up some fresh air, meet your neighbors, and help our beautiful garden bloom.
Just bring yourself (and perhaps some sturdy shoes)—we’ll provide the tools, the tea, and the friendly conversation.
We can't wait to see you in the garden!

What an incredible CSR day we had with the amazing team from MUFG! A huge group of 70 enthusiastic volunteers joined us, and their energy was absolutely contagious!

We split into smaller teams and tackled a mountain of tasks, transforming Abbey Gardens bit by bit. From building and repairing structures, to meticulously weeding and cleaning the ruins, creating stepping logs, propagating delicious strawberries and aromatic herbs, clearing and fixing our compost, and collecting seeds, to painting benches and tables – every single person contributed to making our gardens even more special.

It was truly wonderful to spend the day together, turning Abbey Gardens into an even more beautiful place for everyone to enjoy and relax. We are so grateful for every pair of hands, every smile, and every moment of dedication. Thank you, MUFG, for being such a fantastic partner and for your incredible support!

Today was a fantastic day in the garden thanks to the amazing volunteers from SMBC Bank! 🌿 They brought so much energy and helped us get a ton of work done.

We tackled our long list of tasks, including:
Fixing the raised bed
Weeding the blueberries and flowers
Collecting wild rocket, nigella, and corncockle seeds
Preparing compost and digging up weeds
Watering all the flowers

Even with a mix of sun and rain, we finished everything with happy faces. A huge thank you to the SMBC team for all your hard work in helping us make this garden beautiful. We can't wait to have you back!

Fantastic day CSR day with FCA volunteers. They worked amazingly hard with no complaints about resting. Ricky especially helped out a lot with the building jobs.
We removed soil and rocks from a broken raised bed and prepared to get repaired.
Guys with IKEA skills put together a wheelbarrow.
The carpentry team built a bench with storage and planter near the bee enclosure.
Volunteers cleared wildflowers from dead plants and collected seeds for next year.
Thank you so much FCA for all your support and making Abbey Gardens a wonderful place to relax and enjoy nature.
