Mahmoud al-Bassiuni, 34, a father of four from Beit Hanoun in the Gaza Strip, he was held handcuffed and blindfolded, starved, repeatedly beaten, and subjected to attacks by dogs. In his testimony to B’Tselem, he also describes detainees being beaten on their ge****ls. One was injured so severely that he began urinating in his pants and had to wear diapers.
Al-Bassiuni’s testimony joins numerous accounts by Palestinians describing severe violence, humiliation, starvation, denial of medical care, and torture in Israeli detention facilities. Many prisoners have also testified to sexual violence.
As of August 2026, Israel is holding around 9,299 Palestinians in detention facilities that have become a network of torture camps. At least 90 Palestinians have died in these detention facilities since October 2023 as a result of the inhumane conditions.
These are not exceptional cases, but part of a systematic and institutionalized policy carried out with the full backing of Israel’s political and legal systems.
