South London Botanical Institute Botanical Institute, library, herbarium and garden. Members, botanists and visitors can relax in the lovely botanic garden.

Collections of ferns, wild flowers, medieval and modern medicinal plants, carnivorous and poisonous plants ensure there is always something new to see and be inspired by. In the peace of the library students of all ages have explored their own plant passion, researching insect pollination, early agriculture in Britain, plant distribution or south London's ecology. A large collection of pressed and dried plants, lichens, bryophytes, algae and fungi from Britain and europe are kept in our herbarium, maintained by a group of volunteers.

Join us at the SLBI to hear about Professor Gemma Harvey’s work on landscape restoration and rewilding.

Gemma will discuss what rewilding means in urban areas, drawing on her recent work in Walthamstow. She will outline the interactive and developmental relationship between plants, animals and landforms- known as biogeomorphology - and how it influences landscape restoration and management.

Using plants, soil and alternative photographic processes, South London-based photographer and educator Estelle Vincent creates images in collaboration with the natural world. This exhibition brings together works exploring cyanotypes, plant-based chemistry, souped film and soil chromatography.

The resulting works reveal photography as a living process shaped by the land's materials.

As part of PhotoMonth Festival 2026, visit us to see Estelle's work the first three Fridays in October.

✨Get creative and create stunning plant prints using old-school cyanotype techniques! ✨

Join artist Estelle Vincent and follow in the footsteps of pioneering botanist and photographer Anna Atkins, using plants from the SLBI to make your own beautiful botanical cyanotypes.

Cyanotype is a historic solar photographic process dating back to the 19th century. Learn the basics and experiment with a variety of papers and materials to create your own camera-less prints.

No previous experience required. All materials are provided.

This workshop is part of PhotoMonth and Estelle's work will be display at the SLBI on Friday 2nd, 9th, and 16th of October at 5:30-7:30pm.

Because of the long periods of hot weather and drought we have been experiencing, like many green spaces, the SLBI garden is looking dry. Many of our plants have been struggling. However, because of the changing weather, some new and exciting things have been happening in the garden!
