Do you know someone who served under the Ban on LGBTQIA+ personnel in the Armed forces?

The ban, which included bullying, physical and emotional abuse and led to loss of careers, pensions and honours, was only lifted in 2000, and impacted thousands of personnel.

The UK Government have launched a scheme which recognises the injustice of the ban, and offers restorative measures to those affected. We urge anyone who served during this time to get in touch with the Royal British Legion or Fighting with Pride, who can help you access these measures.

The deadline to apply for the government’s Financial Recognition Scheme is 12 December 2026 and we want to ensure this information reaches as many people affected as possible. If you know someone who was impacted by the ban and feel they would be eligible for restorative measures, please encourage them to call us and have a conversation with our friendly team on 0808 802 8080.

Proud moments and memories to last a lifetime – veteran and dedicated RBL member, Heather has made a real difference through our Women’s Section.

The Royal British Legion’s Women Section has a proud history of dedication to the Armed Forces community, with over 100 years as powerhouse fundraisers.

They recently supported the creation of new end of life rooms in each of our care homes, as well as providing funds to support our Invictus Games Family and Friends Programme.

Heather’s impact has also been recognised nationally, with her receiving an MBE in The King’s Birthday Honours.

Her story serves as a powerful reminder of what our members can achieve.

“Me and Bob would always get up to mischief together. We would go out into the garden to do gardening, and as he was a big football fan we’d sit together in his room and watch the football.”

These are some of the memories Zac holds dear from his time working at our Galanos House. Zac is now a Senior Carer at Poppy Lodge, the home’s dementia care section.

From dancing to singing and live music performances, the home is very lively, filled with that familiar camaraderie you’ll find in the Armed Forces community.

“Every day is different. We don’t just give a basic standard of care, we engage residents in personalised activities, whether that’s taking them out into the gardens or taking a shopping trip.”

The work that carers do matters, and we’re proud to showcase it.

If you’ve ever lived out of a kitbag, you know it’s more than just a bag. It’s your wardrobe, snack cupboard and life support system all in one.

For veterans living with dementia and their carers, KitBags support groups are a lifeline – providing a sense of familiarity, camaraderie and reassurance.

Funded by the Royal British Legion, these groups are supported by our Admiral Nurses, who bring specialist dementia expertise to those who need it.

Veteran Cliff, who facilitates the Gosport group, and the volunteers behind it tell us how it’s making a difference.

On this day 82 years ago, tens of thousands of courageous British and Allied soldiers, sailors and aircrew took part in the D-Day landings, the largest seaborne invasion in history.

Today we remember the service and sacrifice of all those involved, commencing the liberation of France and Western Europe and turning the tide in the Second World War. Together with personnel from the United States, Canada, Australia, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Denmark and Poland, British forces showed immense courage, and endured great sacrifice.

We will remember them.
