Colombia earthquake: 11 days on, what is happening?

With over 45,000 homes damaged, over 9,000 destroyed and over 4,000 people injured, the scale of destruction is immense.

CARE Colombia has been working in the immediate aftermath to mobilise emergency teams and coordinate with national authorities, local aid groups and community leaders to direct support to where it is needed most.

We are especially focused on working with local, women-led organisations with our immediate priorities including distributing water, hygiene supplies, shelter materials and household essentials to displaced families.

Today the BBC has reported that the incoming El Nino is set to be the 'strongest in living memory' with 2027 looking to be the hottest year on record globally 🥵

We have seen daily activities in the UK come to a standstill in the extreme heatwaves this summer but countries around the world have been experiencing the impacts of climate change for decades.

Along with hotter weather, we can expect more frequent and more severe floods, droughts and storms which are destroying communities and livelihoods.

CARE works with communities on the frontlines of climate crises — supporting farmers, providing emergency aid, and helping people build resilience before disaster hits.

Over 1,000 colleagues killed, injured or kidnapped in the last three years. We cannot accept this as normal.

Aid workers must NEVER be targets and yet, a new grim record for violence has been set in the last year.

With 186 humanitarians killed, Gaza remains the deadliest context for the third year running, followed by Sudan with 71 killed.

Of particular concern is the sudden increase of cheap and adaptable armed drones that are putting lethal power into more hands. In Sudan, armed drones caused 80% of civilian deaths. In Ukraine, drones killed 80 civilians in April 2026 alone.

"I felt like I had to do something. I wanted to go back to work, to help, to be there for people who were going through the same uncertainty we had just experienced.” Zeina Hilal, Field Assistant – Emergency Response

After being displaced with her family, Zeina returned to work a few days later, helping organize aid distributions for families affected by the crisis.

Having experienced displacement herself gave her a personal understanding of what receiving support can mean during such a difficult time. Through her work, she listened to people, exchanged experiences, and found connection with families facing circumstances she could deeply relate to.

For Zeina, returning to work was also a way of navigating her own experience. As she puts it, her work helped her through that difficult period because she was doing something she cared about: standing by people and families in need.

This World Humanitarian Day, we recognize the people behind humanitarian work, their experiences, their choices, and the personal motivations that shape the work they do.

Imagine going out to work to support others during a war and leaving your children at home. This is the life of a humanitarian aid worker.

They risk their lives to save and serve others in crisis. Providing warm meals after days of hunger. Clean water and a bar of soap to restore someone’s dignity. A listening ear when words are hard to find.

Today marks five years since the Taliban returned to power.

Communities across Afghanistan continue to face one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises while the response plan remains only around one-quarter funded, leaving millions of people at risk of losing access to healthcare, nutrition services, education and protection.

Women, girls and youth continue to bear the brunt of these compounding crises. Curtailed access to education, employment, freedom of movement, healthcare and equitable participation in public life for women and girls affects Afghan society in both the short and long term.

Continued international engagement, together with long-term investment in essential services, local civil society organisations, including engagement of women is critical to helping Afghan families move from survival toward dignified lives.

In the UK we're now experiencing our fifth heatwave this summer and we're seeing the impacts it's having on our daily lives.

This is happening all around the world on an even bigger scale. Increasing frequency of natural disasters, long-term droughts, devastating flooding, food shortages, economic stability and wildfires that take weeks to extinguish.

These extreme climate events are not going away. But by supporting early action, your donation can help communities react BEFORE these disasters strike.

What drives aid workers to keep going under difficult circumstances?

For the week of World Humanitarian Day, we want to spotlight some of the incredible aid workers at CARE who are committed to showing kindness and compassion in the face of crisis, despite the risk of being targets themselves.

Aid workers around the world are working tirelessly to serve others while being impacted by the same bombardment, displacement, loss and stress.

Eliane is the Gender and Protection Manager at CARE International in Lebanon and she shared some of her personal story with us: working under constant drones, never switching off from the war but still choosing empathy and humanity every day.
