This Carers Week, we are raising awareness of the vital role of unpaid carers.
Across England and Wales, the value of unpaid care was calculated at £162 billion in 2021. Behind that figure are people supporting loved ones every day, often while managing the impact on their own health, finances and social lives.
Sixty percent of people say their caring role means they cannot look after their own health. Sixty-one percent say they cannot enjoy a social life, while 50% say they struggle with their finances due to their caring responsibilities.
At Mind in Bexley, we support unpaid carers who are caring for someone with mental health challenges.
Our Carers Service is available if you are registered with a Bexley GP, live in the London Borough of Bexley, or are caring for an adult relative or friend who lives in Bexley.
Support includes peer-support groups, online evening support, wellbeing workshops, information sessions, and one-to-one emotional support. These sessions offer a safe space to connect with others, share experiences, learn practical tools and look after your own wellbeing.
We are also encouraging people to view our Carers Exhibition, “Navigating the Journeys of Unpaid Mental Health Carers”.
The exhibition shares the voices and experiences of unpaid carers supporting loved ones with mental health challenges. It shines a light on the often-hidden impact of caring and encourages more people to recognise themselves as carers and seek support when they need it.
