Fantastic to see ๐๐๐ญ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ receiving national attention today in . The piece captures exactly what we set out to achieve both architecturally and socially through and .
Throughout the project I was very aware of how special this building is for . Not only for its long history but also as an early symbol of the quality, care and ambition that will guide the wider regeneration of our town centre. Hearing the critics describe it as a thoughtful restoration that brings a long neglected building back to life for local people felt incredibly affirming.
Lewisham Council led this work with real intention. The aim was clear. Create a warm, flexible and community focused space that feels rooted in Catfordโs past while fully ready for its future.
The Observer describes it as a rustic yet sophisticated village hall for training, celebrations, community events and the simple joy of sitting together to talk. That is exactly the kind of place a thriving town centre needs. Spaces that feel local. Spaces people want to return to. Spaces that remain open to everyone.
A huge thank you to Hayatsu Architects and to all the partners who helped shape this restoration. As Cabinet Member for Regeneration and the local councillor, I could not be prouder of what this building now stands for.
Now in the capable care of its new housekeepers, , I cannot wait to see how the next chapter unfolds for this beautiful building.
And for there is much more to come as we continue building a stronger, fairer and more vibrant town centre for our community.
