Fun going through the latest sheet music donations to Oxfam Wanstead this week. On the shelves we have music for violin, cello, and plenty of music for singers, as well as the usual variety of pieces for piano and guitar. Online .... a collection of songs by American composer Samuel Barber (for high voice). 🎶 🎵

The older items donated include a schoolgirl’s music book from the 1900’s with a strong warning against anyone hoping to borrow it, and the 19th century equivalent of a playlist - various ‘popular’ pieces bound into one volume.

This month is the “love” month, give a present to your love, here are some great books that we have in our Wanstead bookshop! Our first book is: Henry V by William Shakespeare sumerge yourself in this story with the French princess Katherine (act V, scene 2). The English king speaks very little French and the French princess speaks even less English. But this does not stop them and the scene ends with a proposal of marriage.
Second book is: Jane Austen’s tale of two sisters carries its subject in its title: good sense on the one hand and an excess of romantic ‘sensibility’ on the other. But this, as Tony Tanner makes clear in his introduction, is only a beginning. Far from being crudely sche-matic, Sense and Sensibility subtly probes, through the trials of its very real heroines, perennial questions about civilization and its discontents that have been more solemnly analysed in our times. It is high drama, though acted out in sighs and glances and unspoken thoughts, of the kind to be found in ‘a society which forced people to be at once very sociable - and very private’.
