London Chinese Children's Ensemble London Chinese Children's Ensemble is a nonprofit organisation supported by China Britain Music Trust.

Exploring music from both the Chinese and western traditions. London Chinese Children’s Ensemble was set up by a group of music enthusiasts based in London who love both our ethnic Chinese roots and the Western culture and traditions, to promote singing and instrument playing among children in our communities, as well as celebrate the distinctive yet connected music cultures from both the UK and C

hina. We hope the performances we are going to present to the public can enhance the communication and collaborations between schools, families, and communities across London and play a meaningful role in bridging the two countries in music and arts education and sharing. We are a non-profit organisation and all our staffs are working on a voluntary basis.

A few words from Thomas Gregory after leading our July LCCE Summer Course 🎶

Over the three days, it was wonderful to see the young musicians grow in confidence — listening to one another, responding, playing, singing and sharing music together.

At LCCE, we believe that children learn so much through making music with others: not only musical skills, but also confidence, communication, friendship and the joy of being part of an ensemble.

Thank you, Thomas, for leading the course with such warmth, creativity and care.

Meet more of our course team 🎶

Alongside our lead tutors, Thomas Gregory for the July course and Dr Georgina Murphy Clifford for the August course, we are delighted to introduce more musicians who will be supporting this year’s Young Musicians Summer Course.

Isabell Karlsson is a violinist at the Royal College of Music, winner of the 2025 RCM Violin Competition, and former concertmaster of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. She is also an active chamber musician and will support small group and ensemble work.

Ed Sylva is currently studying Music at Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge, where he is also a Choral Scholar. A flautist and singer with experience in chamber groups and orchestral settings, Ed will support the course as a student music assistant.

Chudan Deng will join us as course pianist/accompanist, supporting students in rehearsals, course activities and the final sharing performance. She is a London-based pianist specialising in collaborative piano, chamber music and cross-cultural performance.

Ziying Wang is a vocalist and musicology researcher currently reading for a DPhil in Musicology at the University of Oxford. Her work spans classical vocal repertoire, Chinese opera-inspired performance, musical theatre and cross-cultural concert projects.

Why include singing in a music course for instrumentalists? 🎶

Many young musicians spend most of their time learning an instrument individually. Singing and group musicianship can help students develop musical skills that support every instrument.

Through voice and group activities, students can build:

🎵 listening skills
🎵 rhythm and pulse
🎵 pitch awareness
🎵 musical memory
🎵 confidence in expression
🎵 a stronger sense of ensemble and communication

Singing is not about becoming a singer. It is about helping young musicians feel music more directly, listen more actively, and connect with others through shared sound.

This is why our Young Musicians Summer Course includes chamber music, ensemble work, singing or group musicianship, and a relaxed final sharing for families.
