A show about Alfie Murphy.
A film about making a show about Alfie Murphy.
And now, a clip from a film about making a show about Alfie Murphy.

Still with us?

Earlier this year, our behind-the-scenes film ‘Bringing Fantasy to Stage’ was screened at Oska Bright Film Festival. This is a tiny glimpse of the brilliant, imaginative world behind A Small Enclosed Room with Alfie Murphy.

And yes... Alfie’s heading back out on tour this autumn. Dates are also in the link in bio. Basically everything is in the link.

Last week Access All Areas, the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and Netflix UK brought together artists, industry professionals, educators and creatives for an evening of conversation. Together we asked, “what would the industry look like if accessible models of work were available whenever needed?”

A huge thank you to our brilliant partners at Netflix and Royal Central School of Speech & Drama for helping make the event possible, and their ongoing partnership on the Performance Making Diploma. It was a great opportunity to celebrate how the two-year diploma supports learning disabled and autistic artists as they develop their craft and take their next steps into the creative industries.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, shared ideas, asked questions and helped make the event feel so open and energised.

There’s still a long way to go when it comes to access on our screens and stages, but evenings like this remind us that change happens through collaboration, conversation and action.

We know this is just the beginning of many more exciting conversations to come.

This exercise is really difficult!

Artistic Director Nick and Associate Director Emma set the group a challenge in our most recent masterclass. Build an improvised scene using only three-word exchanges.

Sometimes it's the really simple ideas that unlock some creative storytelling.

A trip into our history...

‘We don’t often get to see the history of learning disabled people experiencing joy and living their everyday lives. Mostly you only hear about the dark past of people getting shut away in institutions, so it was really lovely to see people living similar lives to us. I haven’t seen pictures like that before.’ Sophie Green, Trainee Co-Director, Black Cab Company

A group from the Black Cab Company recently visited Hackney Archives Hackney Council , and stepped back in time to when we were known as the Rainbow Drama Group.

Looking through old photos, posters and videos, we found moments of the community making work, creating shows, and rehearsing together.

We also came across poems and materials created in memory of original Rainbow Drama Group member, Harvey Waterman. It sparked conversations about how we remember people in our work, which is really important to the group.

As History Festival celebrates the borough’s rich and diverse past this May, we’re thinking about histories that aren’t always visible, and how important it is to see learning disabled people represented not just through struggle, but through joy, creativity, and everyday life.

“You’ve helped me learn skills to build my future. I want to do more!”

We had an idea.
We talked to our partners.
The idea grew.
We tested it and shaped it.

This idea just got real - our new Theatre Explorers programme will be supported by Youth Music Shift the Scene Fund. 🎉

Working with partners including Newham Youth Empowerment Service, Hackney Shed and Sadler's Wells, this project will transform creative employment opportunities for learning disabled and autistic young people in Newham.

Co-led by our Associate Artists, we’ll build artistic skills, explore learning disabled and autistic identity, and navigate the creative industries.

Alongside this, we’ll be working closely with our brilliant partner organisations to push for more inclusive ways of making and presenting theatre, opening doors that have too often stayed closed.

Let’s get started.

Writer David Mitchell (Cloud Atlas) spent time with artists in our March Masterclass🔥

Open, generous and full of insight, he didn’t hold back, and neither did the artists.

Such a great day - with ideas flying and brains buzzing from the conversations.

Swipe through for a few snaps from the day.
