The composer Franz Liszt (born Raiding, Hungary, on October 22, 1811; died Bayreuth, Germany, 1886), a founding figure of the New German School, completed his third and most famous symphonic poem, Les Préludes (French for 'The Preludes'), S.97, in 1854. However, the work's origins trace back earlier: it was originally conceived as the overture to his four male-voice choral cycle, Les quatre éléments (The Four Elements), composed in 1848. Liszt substantially revised and expanded the piece between 1850 and 1854, transforming it into a standalone programmatic orchestral work during his central years as Kapellmeister in Weimar.

Les Préludes is directly inspired by the lengthy, meditative poem "Les Préludes" from the collection Nouvelles Méditations poétiques (1823) by the French Romantic poet Alphonse de Lamartine (1790–1869). The piece was first performed in Weimar on February 23, 1854, under Liszt's own direction. The work's dedication to his great-nephew, Prince Reuss-Schleiz-Köstritz, is less significant than its dedication to the philosophical concept of human life as a series of preludes to the unknown "Hymn" of the future, marking it as a quintessential work of programmatic music.

Born on May 7, 1840, Tchaikovsky was a central figure of the Romantic period, and this symphony is often regarded as the pinnacle of his output. He conducted its Première in Saint Petersburg on 28 October 1893, just nine days before his sudden death, a proximity that has inextricably linked the work to concepts of a deliberate requiem or an autobiographical farewell. The composer himself held the work in the highest regard, stating, "I believe it to be... the best, and in particular, the most sincere of all my works. I love it as I have never loved any of my other musical offspring."

Academically, the symphony is revolutionary for its subversion of traditional symphonic structure. The most profound break is its finale; breaking the traditional symphonic convention, the finale is a devastating Adagio lamentoso—a crucial lament that fades into silence. This portrait of unmitigated grief follows an illusory, almost violent, march in the third movement, a false climax that deceives the audience into expecting a triumphant conclusion. This structural innovation, combined with the unsettling 5/4 metre of the second movement's "limping waltz," cements the Pathétique's status as a masterpiece of formal design and emotional depth.

A notable interpretation within this academic context is found in the Maximianno Cobra Edition, specifically the Early Recordings - Live at Budapest 1998 conducting the Europa Philharmonia. This performance is significant as it documents the beginning of the real-world practice of his unique artistic approach, which is based on his theory about tempi. The most immediate result is the duration: under Cobra's direction, the Pathétique takes approximately one hour and five minutes, a stark contrast to the conventional 40 to 50-minute performances. In spite of his young age at the time, Cobra already shows a total mastery of the orchestral balance amongst all its sections. The result is not only the revelation of deep contrapuntal details but also a unique lyric and dramatic dimension.

Maximianno Cobra's own words highlight the final, agonizing moments of the symphony's conclusion:

"Within the last bars, the double-basses divisi pulse like an irregular heart that progressively stops beating, yielding to the last breath of shadowed notes, a deep nightly snow and its ethereal dark light. The last resonance fades, being melted into air onto an ineffable silence; time is suspended."
