The composer Franz Liszt (born Raiding, Hungary, on October 22, 1811; died Bayreuth, Germany, 1886), a founding figure of the New German School, completed his third and most famous symphonic poem, Les Préludes (French for 'The Preludes'), S.97, in 1854. However, the work's origins trace back earlier: it was originally conceived as the overture to his four male-voice choral cycle, Les quatre éléments (The Four Elements), composed in 1848. Liszt substantially revised and expanded the piece between 1850 and 1854, transforming it into a standalone programmatic orchestral work during his central years as Kapellmeister in Weimar.

Les Préludes is directly inspired by the lengthy, meditative poem "Les Préludes" from the collection Nouvelles Méditations poétiques (1823) by the French Romantic poet Alphonse de Lamartine (1790–1869). The piece was first performed in Weimar on February 23, 1854, under Liszt's own direction. The work's dedication to his great-nephew, Prince Reuss-Schleiz-Köstritz, is less significant than its dedication to the philosophical concept of human life as a series of preludes to the unknown "Hymn" of the future, marking it as a quintessential work of programmatic music.

The Maximianno Cobra Edition features the unique interpretive vision of the Franco-Brazilian polymath, Maximianno Cobra—noted for his multifaceted roles as a composer, writer, film director, conductor, and pianist and a prominent activist for modern music. Cobra’s distinctive "tempi" approach is central to his performance philosophy across his wide repertoire, spanning from the Renaissance through the Late Romantics. This methodology applies a nuanced, flexible handling of tempo that creates an extra emotive layer, meticulously highlighting the depths of the lyric and contrapuntal inner lines of the scores he brings to life. Cobra's approach brings an unparalleled clarity and architectural sophistication to the music, offering a profoundly engaging experience of this classical masterpiece.

Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 6 - Pathétique - Maximianno Cobra Edition - 1998 - Restored 2025 - 4K

TEMPUS Collection – Original Edition and Creation – IP – All rights reserved. - Timestamps: Movement I: 00:00 - Movement II: 26:59 - Movement III: 38:05 - Movement IV: 50:27 - Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 in B minor, op. 74, the Pathétique, stands as his final, valedictory musical statement. Born on May 7, 1840, Tchaikovsky was a central figure of the Romantic period, and this symphony is often regarded as the pinnacle of his output. He conducted its Première in Saint Petersburg on 28 October 1893, just nine days before his sudden death, a proximity that has inextricably linked the work to concepts of a deliberate requiem or an autobiographical farewell. The composer himself held the work in the highest regard, stating, "I believe it to be... the best, and in particular, the most sincere of all my works. I love it as I have never loved any of my other musical offspring."

Academically, the symphony is revolutionary for its subversion of traditional symphonic structure. The most profound break is its finale; breaking the traditional symphonic convention, the finale is a devastating Adagio lamentoso—a crucial lament that fades into silence. This portrait of unmitigated grief follows an illusory, almost violent, march in the third movement, a false climax that deceives the audience into expecting a triumphant conclusion. This structural innovation, combined with the unsettling 5/4 metre of the second movement's "limping waltz," cements the Pathétique's status as a masterpiece of formal design and emotional depth.

A notable interpretation within this academic context is found in the Maximianno Cobra Edition, specifically the Early Recordings - Live at Budapest 1998 conducting the Europa Philharmonia. This performance is significant as it documents the beginning of the real-world practice of his unique artistic approach, which is based on his theory about tempi. The most immediate result is the duration: under Cobra's direction, the Pathétique takes approximately one hour and five minutes, a stark contrast to the conventional 40 to 50-minute performances. In spite of his young age at the time, Cobra already shows a total mastery of the orchestral balance amongst all its sections. The result is not only the revelation of deep contrapuntal details but also a unique lyric and dramatic dimension.

Maximianno Cobra's own words highlight the final, agonizing moments of the symphony's conclusion:

"Within the last bars, the double-basses divisi pulse like an irregular heart that progressively stops beating, yielding to the last breath of shadowed notes, a deep nightly snow and its ethereal dark light. The last resonance fades, being melted into air onto an ineffable silence; time is suspended."

Tchaikovsky - Serenade for Strings op. 48 - Maximianno Cobra Edition - 1997 - Restored 2025 - 4K

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s (1840-1893) Serenade for Strings in C Major, Op. 48 (1880), stands as one of the most sublime achievements of the Russian romantic repertoire, revered for its blend of classicist form and deeply expressive melodic content. The work is defined by the inner contrapuntal treatment of its wonderful melodies, requiring the suppleness characteristic of a serenade. The Serenade’s architectural strength, particularly in the opening “Pezzo in forma di sonatina,” presents a rigorous study in rhythmic discipline and dynamic tension, a rigor beautifully combined with a passionate lyricism. The composer’s structural precision, combined with the fluidity of the Valse and the energetic finale, makes the work an ideal laboratory for exploring the elasticity and structural integrity of musical time—a complexity fully achievable through Cobra’s tempi approach. This fundamental relationship between rhythm, tempo, and emotional expression forms the initial point of departure for the theoretical investigations central to the work of Maximianno Cobra.

Cobra’s early interpretation of the Serenade served as one of the several practical proving grounds for his highly specialized Cobra development of Tempus theory. This theoretical framework focuses on the quantification and qualitative interpretation of inherent rhythmic pulses within classical composition, seeking to restore an assumed historical approach lost in modern rigid interpretations. The early recordings demonstrating this theoretical development established a new paradigm for rhythmic nuance, emphasizing precise temporal relationships based on the music score analyses. The intellectual rigor behind this approach later culminated in his doctoral research, where his Ph.D. dissertation on the subject received a Cum laude evaluation with Jury congratulations from the Sorbonne University Paris IV.

The operationalization of the Cobra Tempus theory found its major institutional expression through the subsequent implementation of the Europa Philharmonia in Budapest, Hungary. The choice of Budapest underscored its position as a musical twin sister of Vienna, rooted in the deep academic relationship between the Liszt Academy and the Vienna Music University, where Maximianno Cobra completed a significant part of his studies. This ensemble served as the primary vehicle for applying his theoretical principles on a grand scale. The definitive realization of this work is captured in his henceforth anthologic recording of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. This pairing illustrates a complete intellectual and artistic trajectory: from theoretical development to major symphonic, operatic, and Lieder (songs) realization.
