❤️On this polling day, we want to send our very best wishes to local government staff running polls across 136 local authorities in England, as well as for the Scottish Parliament and the Senedd.

A huge thank you for your hard work over the past weeks and months to ensure that today’s elections run smoothly - we do not underestimate the complexity of that task.

The government has backtracked on delaying 30 local elections this year and lost a fight it should never have picked.

Having attempted to pass the political risk of postponing elections on to councils by insisting that it should be a local choice and now backing down under the threat of legal action, the government has shown a capricious disregard for local democracy.

The government should remember that running an election is difficult. Years of our research have shown that the fact that elections are safe and reliable despite severe time and resource constraints is only because of the extraordinary efforts put in by electoral administrators. This most recent announcement means that 30 councils will now have to run elections within an even more constrained timetable. This risks the successful delivery of elections in all of these places, not to mention the additional strain it will needlessly add to the workloads of dedicated staff. 📣 ✨ We have just published our latest local government finance research - the third annual State of Local Government Finance in Scotland report. We surveyed chief executives, leaders, and finance directors from councils across Scotland to provide a detailed view from the inside of the challenges, hopes, and fears of those managing local government finances on a day-to-day basis.

⛔️Our research reveals a funding system that, despite reforms over the last few years, remains unfit for purpose.

In this Scottish Parliament election year, we also sought to understand precisely what needs to change and how the sector believes this can be achieved.

There is no simple way to fix local government finance. However, within the sector, as our report highlights, there is a near-universal consensus on the problems. There is also - to be expected from local government - innovative ideas based on experience and evidence about how they could be solved.
