Our Mental Health Award on validating novel drug targets has now closed.

Thank you to all who applied!

The successful projects will receive up to £700,000 each for up to two years – and get access to industry experts.

The goal is to help discover new and improved treatments for people living with anxiety, depression and/or psychosis.

Learn more about the funding:

Our Climate Impacts Awards has funded 22 projects since 2023 – all focused on making the health impacts of climate change visible and driving policy action at scale.

Here are some examples of the incredible research teams we’re supporting:

• In South Africa, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe, a team is investigating the impacts of heat on the respiratory health of primary schoolchildren.

• In Argentina, a team is exploring the health effects of heatwaves on the elderly in five of the country’s most populous cities: Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Rosario, Mendoza and San Miguel de Tucumán.

• In Australia, a first-of-its-kind project is collecting and collating evidence of how extremely hot temperatures impact remote First Nations residents.

Interested in applying for funding?

We’re funding research to advance the validation of novel targets for drug discovery for anxiety, depression and psychosis.

Successful teams will receive up to £700,000 each for up to two years – and get access to industry experts.

💡 Why are we funding this?

Target validation is a critical step in drug discovery. It tests whether a new drug target can lead to clinical benefits, but it’s underfunded.

By progressing novel targets, we hope to generate the evidence needed to discover new pharmacological treatments for mental health.

🔍 What do we mean by 'targets’?

Any biochemical entity in the body that a drug can bind to, such as receptors, proteins, enzymes or the gut microbiome.

👤 Who can apply?

This call is open to teams of researchers from any relevant discipline, at any stage of their career and based anywhere in the world.

🗓 When is the deadline?

Submit your preliminary applications by 15 April 2025.

Mental health conditions are complex, with many interconnecting factors.

Longitudinal datasets can help us understand them. They hold important biological, psychological and social information, collected over time.

Our new Mental Health Award is funding researchers to use these datasets to find early signs of anxiety, depression and psychosis.

This could lead to more effective early interventions.

We’re looking for diverse teams, combining mental health, data science and lived experience expertise.

Awarded projects will receive up to £5 million and applications open on 23 April.

The impacts of climate change on our physical and mental health aren’t always visible.

Why?

• the links between climate change and health effects are not understood
• climate change's health impacts aren’t given enough focus due to competing priorities
• decision-makers on climate policy are not based where the health impacts are happening

To create meaningful policy change, the health effects of climate change must be made visible.

That’s what our funding call aims to achieve.

The Climate Impacts Awards will support transdisciplinary teams to generate evidence alongside influencing and engagement strategies.

We believe this will lead to climate policy solutions.
