King’s Fellow Laksham Sanassee recently completed a research visit at University of Bath as part of the King’s Commonwealth Fellowship Programme.

Through the programme, King’s Fellows are able to conduct their research at their home Small Island Developing States university along with their partner university in Australia, Canada, New Zealand or United Kingdom. This opportunity allows the King’s Fellows to access new facilities, new expertise and a wider research network that they may not have had access to otherwise.

Today is the final day of the King’s Commonwealth Fellowship Programme Climate Resilience residential, wrapping up a week of learning, collaboration and innovation.

The morning will focus on project design, as the King's Fellows discuss their insights from the week and how their learnings will aid them in developing their projects further throughout their Fellowship.

In the afternoon, the fellows will deliver individual project presentations, showcasing their ideas, progress, and the diverse approaches they are taking to address climate challenges across their Commonwealth Small Island Developing States.

It was an inspiring week that has fostered new connections, deepened expertise, and laid the foundations for continued collaboration.

Day 4 of the King’s Commonwealth Fellowship Programme Climate Resilience residential focused on deepening knowledge and sharpening key skills.

The day began with reflections on the recent site visits, giving Fellows the opportunity to connect real-world insights with their research. Sessions then moved into the foundations of climate finance, exploring how projects are funded and sustained.

In the afternoon, Fellows developed their ability to communicate complex scientific ideas to wider audiences - an essential skill for creating meaningful impact and driving engagement beyond academia.

Day 3 of the King’s Commonwealth Fellowship Programme (KCFP) Climate Resilience residential took the King’s Fellows into the field.

The morning began with a visit to the Rio Cobre Flood Early Warning System, offering first-hand insight into how technology and community engagement are helping to mitigate flood risks. In the afternoon, Fellows visited I-SEEED Ltd to explore sustainable agriculture practices and a survivor refuge, highlighting innovative, locally driven approaches to resilience.

These site visits provide invaluable real-world context, allowing Fellows to connect their research to practical solutions addressing the impacts of climate change.

Day 2 of the King’s Commonwealth Fellowship Programme (KCFP) Climate Resilience residential is underway!

The day began with a daily check-in and a continuation of systems thinking sessions, helping Fellows deepen their understanding of complex climate challenges. In the afternoon, the focus is on accessing and using data to better frame research and decision making, an essential step in strengthening the impact of the Fellows work.

The evening, will see the Fellows come together for a cocktail reception, celebrating the diversity of the cohort through their national dress.

Our King’s Commonwealth Fellowship Climate Resilience Fellows (KCFP) have officially begun their week-long residential!

For the first time, the cohort is meeting in person, bringing together a global network of climate resilience professional to connect, collaborate and learn from one another. The week kicked off with introductions and Fellows presenting their research posters, setting the stage for an exciting week of learning and development.

Over the coming days, the Fellows will continue to develop their research projects, collaborate with their peers and take part in site visits across Jamaica to see firsthand how climate resilience professionals are tackling the impacts of climate change in their communities.

On World Environment Day, we’re reminded that climate action can’t wait, especially for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) who experience disproportionate effects of climate change.

The King’s Commonwealth Fellowship Programme (KCFP) is helping to build climate resilience across Commonwealth SIDS by offering fellowships for mid-career public service professionals, undergraduate scholarships, and PhDs to develop practical solutions in climate change, health, education and engineering, while strengthening local systems and retaining talent in-country.

Through these fully funded fellowships, the KCFP will enable sustained short, medium and long-term impact for Commonwealth SIDS and their communities.
