We are really pleased that the Somerset Council executive has decided to scrap their proposals to cut £185,00 in funding for young carer support and local work to improve identification of young carers in schools.

Our Policy and Practice Manager, Andy McGowan attended yesterday's executive meeting to highlight to councillors the stark national and local data showing why investment in local young carer services is so badly needed and how the Young Carers in School programme is already supporting the council's duty to identify young carers and its wider aims to improve attendance for pupils across Somerset.

A young carer's mum says the decision to scrap the funding cuts feels like a 'weight has been lifted'.

What a month September turned out to be for The Rank Group plc

The team have smashed another huge milestone!

In September they have raised a phenomenal ⭐ £61,240.05 ⭐ in just one month of team fundraising.

There have been walks, half marathons, marathons, charity nights, swimming and the big challenge of the year 10 colleagues climbed Mount Toubkal in Morocco.

We can't thank all the team at Rank enough for their continued passion and hard work and also their customers for supporting the teams.

We are calling for action now. This means well-funded local support that reaches carers before crisis point, real financial and wellbeing support, and a care system that recognises carers as essential and equal.

Without action, our ‘Caring in 2035’ research predicts that 1.6 million unpaid carers could be living in poverty by 2035 rising to more than 2 million by 2050.

Unpaid carers play a major role in holding our care system together, but they cannot be expected to absorb ever-increasing pressure without proper support.

Over the course of just ten years, we found the number of carers caring for 35hrs+ a week had increased from 15% to 20% and that is rising by the year.

Our research shows that once you provide more than 35 hours of care, there is a real cliff edge in terms of physical and mental health, employment, and wage prospects. Almost a third (32%) of carers providing 35+ hours of care are living in poverty.

Changes to social care must rebalance expectations between individuals and the state, and ensure that carers have the tailored, hands-on support they need.

Carers need to be recognised as essential and equal, not invisible and expendable.

Cas’s experience of caring for her partner is an impactful reminder of the pressure facing unpaid carers across the UK.

Our Caring in 2035 research, featured in The i, warns that without action the UK could face a shortfall of 600,000 unpaid carers by 2035, rising to one million by 2050.

We need action now to ensure carers get the support they need, including well-funded local services that reach people before crisis point.

According to our new research with Public First, ‘Caring in 2035’, that's the projected shortfall of unpaid carers in the UK by 2035 if current trends continue.

The number of people needing care is rising. And the supply of both paid and unpaid care is not expected to keep pace.

“Almost all of us will either care for a loved one or be cared for in turn at some point in our lives. However, as a society, we’re simply not facing up to that fact. The gap between soaring demand and shrinking supply of care is opening up like a crocodile's jaws and, unless we act now, it’s unpaid carers, those they care for, and the system itself that will be swallowed whole. This grim future is on the horizon, but there is still time to avoid it if we are willing to do the political hard yards now.” Kirsty McHugh, Chief Executive of Carers Trust.
