A team of EAMENA Project student volunteers from Durham University's Archaeological Department are using high-resolution satellite imagery and historic aerial photography to assess the condition of Samarra, an endangered World Heritage Site in Iraq. The results are being shared with the State Board of Antiquities and Heritage in Iraq to help with future protection initiatives.

Results are being shared with State Board of Antiquities and Heritage in Iraq, to help with future protection initiatives.

Agriculture is the biggest threat, with building and road infrastructure also being major threats to the site. Erosion and natural vegetation are also damaging the archaeology, albeit at a much smaller scale. Read all about it here👇🏻
