This week, representatives from the RCOG are attending the World Health Summit 2026 in Berlin.

Taking place over the next few days under the theme ‘From Crisis to Resilience: Innovating for Health’, the Summit brings together leaders and experts from across the global health community. A key topic this year is ‘Health Equity for Women, Children, and Youth: Ensuring Rights, Inclusion, and Participation’, focusing on the stark inequalities that continue to affect women, children and girls around the world.

After decades of progress, reductions in maternal mortality have stalled, and sexual and reproductive health and rights remain out of reach for many. But there is also an opportunity to build on the progress that has been made and drive further improvements in women’s health worldwide.

The RCOG is committed to improving the health of women and girls worldwide. With more than 18,000 members across over 100 countries, our global community is working to improve standards of care, strengthen education and training and advocate for women’s health. The delegation also includes members of the RCOG Global Health Trainees’ Committee, reflecting the importance of creating opportunities for trainees to actively contribute to global health conversations and partnerships.

A year on from publishing our global gynaecological health position statement and building on our work with our partners in Nigeria implementing the RCOG’s Gynaecological Health Matters programme. The World Health Summit provides an opportunity to connect with stakeholders and champion its recommendations, while sharing learning and contributing to global conversations on women’s health alongside leading peers in the sector.

What does psychological safety actually look like in an O&G team?

Last weekend, 2-3 October, we hosted our first Advanced Obstetric Surgical Skills course at the RCOG.

Developed in recognition of the increasing complexity of modern obstetric surgery and the need to support surgeons in developing advanced operative skills that underpin safe maternity care, the two-day course combined specialist teaching and virtual lectures with a full day of high-fidelity simulation and hands-on practical training.

The course gave trainees the opportunity to develop technical skills, strengthen surgical decision-making and build confidence in managing complex obstetric cases. The hands-on element received particularly positive feedback from trainees, highlighting the importance of practical training opportunities in developing confident surgeons.

A trainee who attended the course shared their feedback:

“The course has been a really incredible experience, and we’re so lucky to have world experts here, hearing directly from the people who have written the papers. I’ve learnt so much from the lectures, but especially from the hands-on time, which is so crucial to our training. Unfortunately, there is such a big gap in this type of training.”

The course forms part of the RCOG Surgical Skills Project and our wider maternity safety programme. Through our role as an educator, from setting the curriculum to delivering exams, courses and events, we're committed to ensuring O&G trainees have the skills, experience and confidence to provide safe, high-quality and compassionate care for women.

For , we're highlighting a unit supporting SAS and Locally Employed (LE) doctors to thrive. At UCLH, around half the doctors on labour ward, in clinics and theatres are SAS or LE doctors. Yet provision of educational supervision and ensuring equity in quality and recognition are different things.

In a new guest blog, College Tutors Diane Nzelu and Neera Balachandran explain how UCLH closed that gap: spreading educational supervision fairly across existing funded time and making accreditation universal so every SAS and LE doctor is supervised to the same standard as deanery trainees.

The RCOG has published an updated ' Birth options after previous caesarean birth' patient information resource, aligned with the latest NICE guidance on caesarean birth (NG192).

The resource is designed to be used by maternity teams and by pregnant women and people to support informed discussions and decision making around birth options. A caesarean, vaginal birth, or vaginal birth after a previous caesarean all carry different benefits and risks, and because every woman is different, these will vary for each individual.

Dr Jenny Barber, Vice President for Clinical Quality at the RCOG, said:
“Every woman and baby deserves safe, compassionate care. Women and birthing people must be supported with balanced, accurate information so they can make informed decisions about their pregnancy and birth. The RCOG does not promote one type of birth over another. This resource is designed to support conversations about birth choices, including the benefits and risks of each option, personalised to the individual.
