⚔️ Longsword, smallsword, rapier, sabre, sidesword

There comes a time in everyone’s life when we all need to take a good, hard look in the mirror and ask ourselves an important question: “how screwed would I be if I was suddenly transported back in time to 15th century Italy?” The answer is usually the same: pretty screwed. Unless you’re a fast runner, the first time someone comes at you with a sword will likely also be the last. Fighting with Eur

opean style swords and other weapons was, until relatively recently, a lost art. Martial arts that were used extensively throughout medieval and renaissance Europe gradually died out over the centuries until they were nearly forgotten. In the last few decades, Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) has begun to reconstruct these lost arts using historical texts that detail techniques and principles for using weapons, and training and applying these techniques in a non-cooperative or competitive context. The London Historical Fencing Club (LHFC) is a small charity (registration number 1181581). We were set up with the goal of to promoting HEMA through training, scholarship and competitions and tournaments. We train using in a several different weapons and sword fighting styles. The historical sources which form the basis of our teaching range from the high medieval period (early 15th Century), through the renaissance and into the early modern sources (18th century). We teach a wide range of weapons from throughout these periods. We welcome anyone from all walks of life, and pride ourselves on having an inclusive environment where everyone should feel free to be themselves. Whatever your gender, race or sexual orientation, you can be assured that you will be welcome here. You also shouldn’t be concerned about your fitness level or prior martial arts background, as most exercises can be performed slowly or at speed depending on your comfort zone, and we will do our best to accommodate any disability. So whether you are worried about time travel, the impending zombie apocalypse or just want to have a good time, come join us at one of our regular classes and learn to use a sword the way it was meant to be. June is here, and that means Pride Month in the UK.

We are incredible proud of to have so many LGBTQ+ fencers at LHFC. It’s why we keep our pride flag up year round – to show that our q***r members are integral to our club. We work tirelessly to ensure that LHFC is a safe environment for q***r HEMAists, and it is a core belief as an organisation that HEMA should be an inclusive and supportive sport.

It seems like every year, we’re in exceedingly unprecedented times with the treatement of LGBTQ+ people in UK society. With the rights of q***r and trans people being actively rolled back and unprecedented transphobia in this country, now more than ever we must stand in solidarity with our LGBTQ+ family, friends, fellow club members and affirm that we will not stand for intolerance. We are here by their side through it all. We are proud of who we are as a club, and we are proud of our members.

Happy Pride Month to all – HEMA is for everyone.

A massive well done to Team LHFC who went to Herne’s Cup last weekend, especially for those who attended a HEMA tournament for the very first time. We came away with 5 podium finishes - the most out of any club at the event.

Kelsey took the gold medal in the UK’s largest single longsword tournament ever - coming at the top of an incredibly crowded field of 80 fencers and battling her way through 5 rounds of eliminations. Zuza took the silver medal in the Women’s+ Longsword, losing by a single point. Alex J and Olivia took gold and bronze in Women’s+ Sabre respectively, with Olivia going on to take gold in Women’s+ Sword & Buckler despite 1. never fencing it before and 2. going lefty.

In Open Longsword, Dmitrii, Lauren, Victor, Zuza, Patrik and Eric represented LHFC, with Zuza, Patrik and Eric getting through to eliminations. In Women’s+ Longsword, we had Lauren and Natasha get through to the first round of eliminations. In Open Sabre, we had Povilas, Victor, Sam and Jeevan get through to the first round, with Eric getting through to the second. Olivia came joint-5th, just missing out on a semi-finals match. Lawrence and Shiyi represented us in Open Rapier and Dagger, with Lawrence getting to the first round of eliminations.

Well done to Povilas, Wayne, Eric, and Jeevan who took to the tournament piste for the first time. A shoutout to Kerri, who represented us in not one, not two, but three categories including Open Sword & Buckler.
