This summer, the UK has so far experienced an unprecedented five heatwaves. Emergency measures like Severe Weather Emergency Protocols can be used to help people sleeping rough in extreme heat, but a recurring risk needs more than a one-off response.

In the US, people experiencing homelessness have been found to be 26x more likely to be hospitalised for heat-related illness than the general population. A risk that UK services will increasingly have to plan for, too.

In a recent blog, we explore the danger of extreme heat for people experiencing homelessness in the UK.

Experiencing can have a major impact on young peoples’ educational outcomes, leading to long-term disadvantages later in life.

That’s why Depaul USA runs the Dax Program, to assist college students at risk of or experiencing homelessness. As well as providing housing, the Dax program also offers young people counselling, financial support and life skills workshops.

Mia is one young person supported by Dax. She spent time sleeping in her car, experiencing mental and physical exhaustion. Now, she's housed by Dax. Having a place to stay means she is able to focus on her studies.

We're excited to announce that Famvin Homeless Alliance (FHA) has begun an exciting new chapter as part of Depaul International.

Since 2017, FHA has fostered collaboration, advocated for systemic change, and supported practical action in 80 countries. FHA's 13 Houses Campaign, which creates and improves services for those experiencing , has supported over 11,140 people to date.

The integration of FHA into Depaul International marks a natural evolution of this work.

By bringing FHA's advocacy, collaboration and Vincentian engagement together with Depaul International's knowledge, strong global network and infrastructure, we can make an even greater impact in our work to address homelessness.

The FHA identity will very much remain a central part of the Vincentian community, falling under the coordination of Depaul International.

Collectively, we can make great progress towards ending .

Yesterday, we joined local, national and international delegates, experts through experience, and business leaders to mark the three year anniversary of , the Royal Foundation's programme to address homelessness.

It was brilliant to hear about the progress made so far, and how projects across Homewards locations are making a tangible impact.

Together, we can make homelessness rare, brief and unrepeated.

“In recent years, people experiencing homelessness have been facing hot summers too, not only winters. We have long been saying that not only is winter a threat to people experiencing homelessness, but summer can also be a major risk.”

During hot weather, everyone deserves a place where they can have respite and cool down

With rising temperatures sweeping across Europe this week, those experiencing homelessness cannot seek respite and thus face particularly acute risks.
