Awamu

Awamu Awamu is an international charity working with women & girls in the slums of Kampala, Uganda We invest in them – their education, skills and healthcare.

Mission: Awamu exists to super charge the potential of women and girls in the slums of Kampala, Uganda. And as they rise they take their communities with them

Vision: Girls in the slums are fearless about their futures. Awamu means ‘together’ in L’uganda, the main language spoken in the slums, we chose it as it reflects the spirit of the networks of women we partner with there. It is their determ

ination, along with your support, that changes the lives of the most vulnerable in their community. awamu.co.uk

Fourteen years ago, Sharifah joined an Awamu-supported urban farming course. Today, she's helping other girls create opportunities of their own.

More girls and young women from her community in Bwaise are turning small pieces of land into thriving places of food, healing and opportunity.

Some are learning to grow vegetables. Some are starting to earn income for the first time. All are building confidence after violence, exclusion and loss.

Over the next few weeks, we want to introduce you to the Garden of Eden, a youth-led urban farming initiative cocreated and led by young women in Kampala.

These young women are not just growing gardens and green spaces. Creating opportunities. Building resilience. And leading change.

Stay tuned as we take you on a journey through the Garden of Eden and share ways you can support these young women and girls through our campaign 22-29 June - when all donations will be doubled. Read more on our Website https://www.awamu.co.uk/garden.

More good news for girls in Kampala! ✨

We’re excited to share that we’re starting a new partnership with the Randal Charitable Foundation(-foundation ), working alongside our current supporters at the Conservation, Food & Health Foundation.

Their support means we can take the next step in our work to make life-saving reproductive and sexual healthcare respectful, safe, and easy to access for girls — including drop-in clinics and community outreach delivered with love by our women-led partner, Tusitukirewamu Group.

Girls often tell us they don’t go to health centres because they worry about being judged, shamed or turned away.

So we’re training and supporting health workers to make healthcare places where girls feel welcomed and respected.

By building these skills and strengthening how care is delivered, we expect this work will reach more than 15,000 girls over the coming years. 💛

Thank you for being part of this community that stands with girls and makes change happen.

Thank you for believing in transformative, life-saving work.

“Because of you, I stayed in school.” — Daphine 💛

We want to share some good news — and a thank you.

Thanks to our community, and everyone who joined Make Mine A Double, our online fundraising Christmas party broadcast all weekend, we were able to access all the matched funding for our girls’ education appeal.

This support came at exactly the right time. When funding for girls education is harder to secure. We couldn’t take this opportunity for granted and we are so grateful.

To show what this means in real life, here’s what Daphine, a former Awamu student now in further education, told us:

“Your support came into my life at a moment when I felt completely alone and unsure of my future.
Knowing that someone believed in me gave me strength and hope.
Because of you, I stayed in school.
I began to see myself as someone who deserved a chance.
Your kindness reminds us that we matter, that we are not alone.”

Thank you for standing with girls in Kampala. 💛
