AdviceUK

AdviceUK This is the page for AdviceUK, the UK’s largest support network for free, independent advice centres.

AdviceUK is the UK’s largest support network for free, independent advice centres. AdviceUK was formed in 1979 as the Federation of Independent Advice Centres (FIAC). In 1979, our founders shared a conviction that people’s rights have no meaning without the means to enforce them. They saw their own work – of providing free information and advice – as a vital contribution to helping individuals and

communities in need to enforce their rights and improve their quality of life. We hold the same conviction today, and whilst the social welfare landscape has radically altered in the past 30 years our commitment to the provision of free, independent advice has not changed.

We asked our members what they value most about AdviceUK Membership. Here's what they said.

The advice sector is facing growing demand, increasingly complex cases, and a rapidly evolving policy landscape.

Against this backdrop, three membership benefits stood out from the responses of 188 member advice services across England, Scotland and Wales:

✅ Funding updates and sector insights
✅ Networking and learning opportunities
✅ A strong national voice and advocacy

These benefits help advice services stay informed, build connections, and influence the issues that matter most to the sector.

If you're looking to strengthen your advice service, we'd love to welcome you to our network.

We welcome the Government's commitment to bringing mental health support closer to communities.

But for many young people, poor mental health does not exist in isolation. It is often driven or made worse by debt, insecure housing, problems with welfare benefits or unemployment. Free and independent advice services help people address those underlying issues every day.

If the Government wants to shift from crisis to prevention, it must invest not only in new mental health facilities, but also in the trusted advice services that help prevent people reaching crisis in the first place.

We welcome the Insolvency Service’s commitment to reviewing the insolvency system and making it simpler and more accessible for people in debt: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/the-insolvency-service-annual-plan-2026-to-2027

Every day, our members in the free and independent advice sector support individuals and families struggling with debt. Their experience is essential to building a system that is fair, accessible and meets their needs. Reform should also strengthen protections against poor-quality insolvency advice and improve referral routes into free and independent debt advice:https://www.adviceuk.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Oct22-Call-for-evidence_personal-insolvency-framework_AdviceUK-response.pdf
