"The process has taught me important life skills that will help me when pursuing a degree at university." 🎓

Over 1,900 pupils across Leicestershire have taken part in The Scholars Programme, which gives students from non-selective state schools and colleges across the UK the opportunity to work with a PhD researcher and and attend graduation events at universities like The University of Sheffield.

Schools like Lutterworth High School, Martin High School, Anstey, Brockington College and Soar Valley College have found the programme useful for students' abilities across the board, including essay writing skills, in-depth subject knowledge, and the confidence to pursue higher education.

"I’ll never forget hearing that my tutor was a “Doctor”. I genuinely thought doctors were only people you saw when you were sick. It blew my mind that you could become a doctor through research, and ever since, my family joke that one day I’ll be Dr Taylor-Seal."

Mia Taylor-Seal took part in The Scholars Programme when she was in Year 9 at Ormiston Sandwell Community Academy in the West Midlands. She’s now at the University of Exeter where she has been a leading, innovative voice on the importance of social mobility.

In the past year, several of our Parent Power chapters have gone on trips to King's College London. These trips represent a wonderful full-circle moment, with chapters from across the UK visiting the university where Parent Power started back in 2017 in partnership with Citizens UK.

In December, 120 parents, carers and young people from our Birmingham, East London and East Oxford chapters explored the KCL campus, took part in interactive taster sessions and shared the positive changes they have made in their communities. One of the visiting students shared: "I saw the university that I want to apply to in the future."

In March, 60 members of our Cardiff and Newport chapters spent the day together touring the campus, hearing from student ambassadors and getting lots of advice on university access. A student shared in their feedback: "I learnt what grades I need to get and what subjects I need to focus on."

As one parent reflected, being involved in Parent Power means being "part of a bigger movement improving access to education for all and making UK society better."

Computer Science Scholars is an exciting project we've launched with The Hg Foundation to support over 500 female and non-binary sixth form students to pursue Computer Science degrees between 2025-2028.

We are currently inviting schools to sign up for Computer Science Scholars Year 12, which will take place in Spring 2027 for Year 12 female and non-binary students who are studying Maths A Level, who will have:

🖥️ an online tutor launch event, where they will meet their tutor and be introduced to their course
🖥️ six online university-style tutorials, followed by a final assignment
🖥️ a feedback session for detailed feedback from their tutor on their final assignment

Students will also be invited to attend three ‘Careers in Computer Science' webinars.

Since 2011, over 28,000 pupils across Greater London have taken part in The Scholars Programme, which gives students from non-selective state schools and colleges across the UK the opportunity to work with a PhD researcher.

Schools like Eastbury Community School, Bentley Wood High School, Woodbridge High School, Emerson Park Academy and Perivale Primary School have found the programme useful for students' abilities across the board, including including essay writing, debating skills, and thinking outside of the box.

Schools like NET Walbottle Academy, St Thomas More Catholic School, The Grangefield Academy, Polam Hall School and St Wilfrid's R.C College have found the programme useful for students' abilities across the board, including university knowledge, academic confidence, and learning in-depth about a topic.

"The Scholars Programme will be the spark. Chase Mum for that consent form. It will be the first time you sit in university-style tutorials. The first time a PhD tutor debates ideas with you and expects more than surface-level answers. The first time you submit assignments and realise: I can do this."

As part of our newly launched Backing Brilliance strategy, we asked Brilliant Club ambassador Sumaiyah Patel, who took part in The Scholars Programme back in 2012, to write a letter to her 12-year-old self.

Sumaiyah has had an incredible journey since taking part in the programme. She went to the University of Warwick to study History and Politics and now works as a Legal Business Analyst and campaigns for social mobility.
