We're turning up the volume on 50 years of punk with a brilliant line-up of cultural trailblazers ready to shake up what you thought you knew about music history! 🔥

There’s still time to book your seat for a special screening of Barrel Children: The Families Windrush Left Behind at the gorgeous King’s Cross - but don’t leave it too late!

From award-winning journalist and director Nadine White, Barrel Children tells the powerful and deeply personal stories of the Caribbean children who grew up separated from parents who had left to rebuild Britain - knowing them, for a time, through the ‘barrel’ care packages sent back home.

Through stories of separation, migration, reconciliation and rediscovery, the film shines a light on a part of the Windrush story that is too often left untold.

What a joyful, uplifting way to open Camden Black History Season 2026 and celebrate this year’s theme, Honouring Our Communities. 🧡💙💛

Last Friday, the room was full of energy, creativity and connection as we started the season as we mean to go on - with a true celebration and honouring of our communities, from traditional African celebration to the young voices paving the way forward.

From ’s powerful drumming, dance and libation ceremony, to the brilliant young voice of Ama Bedaiko-Ntim from , inspiring words from Camden’s Mayor and Chinenye Egbuna Ikwuemesi of The Afrodeities Institute, and an unforgettable performance of The Unknown Soldier by (which had half the room up dancing!)- it was an evening full of moments that brought us together.

A huge thank you to everyone who made it feel so special - our hosts (), artists, speakers, partners and every person who joined us to celebrate, connect and share in the moment.

And if Friday night was a glimpse of what’s ahead, we have so much to look forward to this season. 💛

🌟 FROM ITCH RADIO WORKSHOP PARTICIPANT TO CAMDEN TOWN HALL 🎙️

Last Friday, Ama, the youngest participant to take part in an Itch Radio workshop, was invited by Love Camden to deliver a speech at the launch of their Black History Season at Camden Council Town Hall.

It was a special moment to see Ama standing confidently in front of the room and sharing her voice, and even more special to see her warmly welcomed by the Mayor of Camden, Councillor Patricia Leman. ❤️

At Itch Radio, we believe in creating spaces where young people can find their voice, build confidence and be heard. Seeing young participants take those skills beyond the studio and into the wider community is exactly why we do what we do. 🎙️🙌

The legacy of Light Up Kilburn continues 💡

We were delighted to bring Light Up Kilburn back to Kilburn Grange Park in February - more than 1,500 people joined us across two evenings to celebrate light, creativity and community.

Now, the festival’s legacy continues with Girls of the Light, a free collage workshop led by artist Hanna Benihoud. Explore women’s experiences of the city after dark and share your ideas about nighttime safety and the role of lighting in public spaces.

Conversations from the workshop will inform Hanna’s final projection artwork and help shape Light Up Kilburn 2028.

🎬 BLACK HISTORY SEASON CINEMA 💙💛🧡

During the Windrush era, an estimated 90,000 children were left behind in the Caribbean while their parents travelled to Britain in search of work and opportunity. Many knew their parents through letters, photographs, and the barrels filled with clothes, food and gifts that arrived from overseas.

Perhaps this is part of your story. Maybe it was the experience of a parent, relative or friend. Or perhaps you want to understand another perspective and, for an evening, see the world through somebody else’s eyes.

Join us for a special screening of Barrel Children: The Families Windrush Left Behind at Everyman King’s Cross, followed by a live Q&A with director Nadine White and Subira Cameron-Goppy from the Claudia Jones Organisation and Windrush Justice Clinic, hosted by Charmaine Simpson of Black History Studies.

Inspired by the experience of Nadine’s late father, who was a “Barrel Child”, this deeply personal documentary shares real stories of childhood separation, long-awaited reunions and families learning to know one another again.

It is an emotive and absorbing exploration of family, identity, belonging and a part of the Windrush story that is still felt across generations today.
