This week, HCUK had the honour of joining to unveil a blue plaque honouring Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin at 70 Lansdowne Road in London. 🔵
Cecilia was a British-born astrophysicist who became the first woman to earn a PhD in astronomy at Harvard, the first woman promoted to full professor in Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and the first woman to head a department there.
Her dissertation proved that hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. It was initially rejected but was later called the greatest PhD thesis ever written in astronomy.
We were honoured to be part of the day alongside Oxford University Astrophysicist, Professor Jocelyn Bell-Burnell, Dr Shini Somara, engineer, author, broadcaster and member of the Blue Plaques Panel, Dean Hopi Hoekstra of Harvard University, Edgerley Family Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences, and Astronomer Royal Professor Michele Dougherty to make sure her name is remembered in the place where her story began.
Here’s to the trailblazers like Cecilia. 🌟
