World Photo Day -

Facts inform, but stories inspire. This , we want to thank every brave photographer who has enabled the stories of conflict to be told through not just stats but stories.

Every photo comes with profound risk to both psychological and physical safety - an often unseen sacrifice but one that is pivotal in the documentation of the unfiltered realities of war.

To mark the day, we wanted to share four photos, which not only illustrates the bravery and resilience of photographers, but captures the raw moments of joy within the chaos.

*The Army Film & Photographic Unit (AFPU) was a British military unit established in 1941 to record combat operations during World War II. Composed largely of professional
journalists and cameramen turned soldiers, the unit operated in major global theatres to capture official frontline footage and photographs.

Leaving the military can mean adjusting to a completely different way of life.

SSAFA’s Mentoring service provides personalised, one-to-one support to service leavers and their families as they transition to civilian life, helping them build resilience, set goals and move forward with confidence.

In 2025, SSAFA supported 1,945 people through mentoring.

Chop for a cause!

Sitting around a campfire, surrounded by friends, Rich made the bold commitment to cut his famously long hair in aid of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

Living in a small village in the South West, Rich has spent his years surrounded by veterans and wanted to raise money for a cause that would help those in his local area.

Rich said goodbye to his long locks on Saturday, 25 July and has since raised more than £500 for SSAFA!

Thank you, Rich, for cutting your hair to help the Armed Forces community.

SSAFA is a trusted source of support for serving personnel, veterans and their families in their time of need and our trained volunteers and employees provide practical, emotional and financial assistance to the Armed Forces community to ensure they never battle alone.

This week, families have headed to the Calvert Trust in Exmoor, Devon, to enjoy a week where they can reconnect and spend quality time together.

SSAFA’s Short Break scheme has been bringing families together for more than ten years.

Offering a safe and inclusive time away for serving – and reservist – families who have a child with an additional need or disability, whether these are physical, behavioural, emotional, mental health or a combination of the above, these breaks are at the heart of SSAFA.

Applications for next years' trips will open in early 2027. To be one of the first families to know when the application process opens, join the FANDF (Forces Additional Needs & Disability

Serving Community Teams-

In 2025, SSAFA’s Serving Community Team volunteers supported 13,227 people across the serving Armed Forces community.

That included 4,488 people brought together through Community Connection activities, while 8,416 people benefited from community grants.

Our volunteer-led teams provide financial, practical and emotional support to serving personnel, reserves and their families in the UK and on British military bases overseas.

On this day in 1914, World War One officially began with the shot that was heard around the world.

A single event triggering a chain reaction which saw brave servicemen and women give their life for civilians around the world. From the Western front to the lives lost at home, this war shaped our history books.

Today we would like to honour the brave individuals who put their lives on the line for a
safer future. SSAFA have had the honour to help many WWI veterans in their time of need and we will continue to recognise and uphold their courage, commitment and service.

SSAFA, as always, stands by the entire Armed Forces community and we will continue to offer practical, emotional and financial support to anyone who needs it.

We're geared and ready for Driving Force 2026! 10 countries, 11 days, an adventure of a lifetime.

With just 10 days to go until the event kick starts, participants will begin their adventure in Dunkirk with a short memorial service for those military personnel that have given the
ultimate sacrifice.

Be assured this is no ordinary driving adventure; packed full of superb roads, exciting and unique destinations and will be full of surprises. This incredible and challenging journey will take drivers through the scenic roads of Europe covering countries such as France, Austria, Slovenia to Croatia, Bosnia, Germany, Belgium and the UK - all raising vital funds
for SSAFA!

Did you know SSAFA's RAF Personal Support and Social Work Service (PS&SWS) can be accessed by any member of the RAF community online - or you can reach out to a local member of the team at any of the RAF stations in the photo below!

The RAF PS&SWS provides a safe space for anyone looking for someone to talk to. There’s no judgement – they treat everyone with respect, whatever you tell them.

For anyone needing practical support, the team will work with you to put a plan of action in place, making sure you have everything you need to take control of your situation.
