"Play is freedom. Play is power for these children. It gives them choice and independence, which is very empowering." 🎨🧸
When children arrive in A&E, they often don't get a choice about what happens next. They may need blood tests, X-rays or other procedures that can feel frightening and overwhelming.
That's where Play Specialist Katie comes in.
Thanks to our funding, Katie works at Whipps Cross Hospital emergency department, where she uses play, distraction and preparation to help children feel calmer and more in control during what can be a stressful experience.
From supporting anxious children through procedures to helping teenagers experiencing mental health crises, Katie adapts her approach to every young person she meets. Sometimes it's games, toys or storytelling. Sometimes it's simply being there.
"The medical team will get your child better, but for me, I'll know my job is done if I can get at least one smile out of the child." - Katie
