Delighted to catch up with the very busy Ana Cavilla who co-ordinates all the work of Whitton Network with her army of dedicated local volunteers/volunteer drivers. Always a pleasure to catch up with Janet Hilton, Chair of Cooking Up. It was great to learn more about Cooking Up’s remarkable growth from when they first began in 2022 and their success today, as they continue to expand delivery of their friendly cookery classes to those in challenging circumstances across the Borough. They adapt their classes to respond to each cohort’s specific needs and collaborate closely with voluntary sector partners to deliver training to fulfil their vision of enabling people to cook healthy, tasty food for themselves and their families.

Great to catch up with Simon Westgarth, CEO of Richmond Furniture Scheme. It’s always a hive of activity at RFS: with stock arriving, items being repurposed in their workshops and bargains to be had. RFS offer free collection of unwanted furniture and sell it at a very affordable price, with a further 25% discount to people on benefits, care leavers, students, refugees and Blue Light card holders. RFS also source high-quality refurbished appliances such as fridge freezers, ovens and washing machines to resell. Like many local charities, RFS operate with a small hardworking team and many dedicated volunteers.

It was good to catch up with Trina Pearse, Fundraising Manager and a privilege to be invited to see Us in a Bus’ practitioners working 2:1 with local people who all have profound learning disabilities, complex needs and sensory processing differences. Us in a Bus practitioners use the Intensive Interaction approach which mirrors a person’s movements and echoes their sounds, drawing them from their internal worlds and into a more social and connected world. Music and play is also used to share fun and togetherness ensuring the people helped are heard and valued - conveying the message ‘you are good to be with’.

We were pleased to meet the busy Voices of Hope team and see food recipe boxes and their ingredients which will feed a family of four, being prepared for distribution to local schools. Voices of Hope have been piloting Baby Box to support families to wean babies, with healthy and sustainable recipes. They also support and enable women through wellbeing activities and group support work, to thrive after experiencing domestic violence. It was a pleasure to meet the wider team to learn about the preparation to expand this service into the Hampton Fund area of benefit.
