British Exploring Society

British Exploring Society A world class youth development charity with a unique heritage founded on the belief that challenging experiences in remote locations can change lives.

We take young people to remote locations where they face challenges, gain skills and learn about themselves and the fragile environments that they explore. They return with a new-found confidence and self-belief which they carry forward to their future life. More than this, they forge friendships for life and become part of a unique community of explorers with shared perspectives on the world.

Our annual Chair’s Challenge is back, and we’d love you on the team.

Join us on 12th September 2026 for the Thames Path Ultra Challenge - a fun, social and inspiring day out along the river.

‘We Belong Here’ – out now on YouTube 🎥 🎬

Many of our young people join us after having gone through challenging experiences in life. As a charity, we offer them space and time away from the pressures of their everyday environments. So each young person can begin to reflect and figure out where they want to go next in life.

Rahim found out about us by chance, after his psychiatrist suggested he seek out an outdoor adventure to help with his diagnosis of PTSD. His expedition was transformative - not just for him but also for the people who joined him in the wilderness that summer.

‘We Belong Here’ – out now 🎥 🎬

In 2024, Mountain Training reported that only 35% of registrants for outdoor qualifications were female. We’re doing what we can to help change that.

On our programmes we create safe spaces and connect young people with inspiring role models - our amazing volunteer expedition Leaders.

Ellie joined us having already started a career in the outdoors, but felt unable to take the next big leap in their professional journey. After completing an expedition programme with us, Ellie has since gone on to qualify as a Mountain Leader and is now a regular expedition Leader with us, acting as an inspiring role model for others.

‘We Belong Here’ – out now.

Accessibility is crucial to our work as a charity.

We want all young people to have the choice to join opportunities like the ones we provide. Working with our amazing community of volunteer expedition Leaders, we remove obstacles wherever we can. Ali joined a three-week expedition to the Outer Hebrides to challenge himself and overcome anxieties associated with his dyspraxia.

‘We Belong Here’ 🎥🎬 out now.

Naffie hadn’t spent much time outdoors when she decided to step outside her comfort zone and join one of our expeditions.

Naffie and her foster mum Julie’s humour, honesty and heartfelt reflections in ‘We Belong Here’ are a powerful reminder for why equal access to adventurous outdoor learning is vital for young people’s self-development.

Naffie found us via our recruitment partner , who we’ve worked with for several years to ensure children living in care can access our life changing opportunities.
