In 2001 two young, energetic and upcoming teams, the Pinoy Supersonics and the Fili Suns made the historic decision to combine their talents, forming the Pinoy Sunics. This exciting new team made up of close friends, brothers and compares, honed their talents in the east end playgrounds of Balaam Park, Lea Valley, Newham and East Ham leisure centres. The Sunics entered their first competitive KAMP
I league that year, which was held in Woodside School. They faced stiff competition from veteran and upcoming teams but their energetic and fearless play earned them a place in the finals against the then dominant and reigning champions, Tikboyz. Unfortunately it was not meant to be for the Sunics losing a thrilling game by one point. Since that groundbreaking year the Sunics have continued to persevere, combining their enthusiasm and experience with a basketball philosophy built on hard work, smothering defence and quick ball movement on offence. The last 12 years has been a great journey for the team: they have been in multiple play-offs, competed in seven finals and have taken home four championship trophies. The '08, '09 and '10 seasons were their most successful, winning the 2008 season without a regular season loss and going on to win a historic 3peat in 2010. They avenged their 2011 loss in the finals by winning the 2012 season in a closely fought series against fierce rival, the Controllers, taking the tie by 2 wins to 1. Personal accolades have also been forthcoming for Sunics players who have regularly featured as MVPs, mythical fives and best in position. The Sunics continue their legacy by building on their strong foundations of family, brotherhood and hard work.
