At Bombolulu School of Promise in Kenya, music has become a regular part of the school week, giving pupils opportunities to take part, build confidence and enjoy time together.

Head Teacher Miriam shares how Music as Therapy International’s Tailored Training has supported her team to continue using music with their pupils — and some of the changes they have noticed since the training.

“Music gives them freedom.”

(This post was created in Hungarian, English And Romanian. You may be reading an auto-translation.)

Monika Manases a Music as Therapy International egyik romániai partnere, aki a nálunk tartott bevezető képzést követően saját zenei tapasztalataira építve kidolgozta saját képzését, és a Music as Therapy International által ajánlott trénerré vált. 2010 óta Monika 21 alkalommal tartotta meg a Sound Art E-Motion Egyesület által támogatott „Zenei terápiás munka a fogyatékkal élők felépülésében” című kurzusát Románia-szerte. Nemrégiben izgatottan hallottunk két, csíkszeredai (Erdély keleti része) képzésének végzőséről, akik a tanultakat mélyen beépítették munkájukba.

Monika Manases is one of Music as Therapy International’s Romanian Partners who built on her own use of music following introductory training with us to develop her own training course and become a Music as Therapy International recommended Trainer. Since 2010, Monika has delivered her course - “Therapeutic work through music in the recovery of people with disabilities”, supported by Sound Art E-Motion Association – 21 times across Romania. Recently we were excited to hear about two graduates from her training in Miercurea Ciuc (eastern Transilvania), who have taken their learning and integrated music deeply into their work.

Next week marks an exciting milestone for Music Helps: India as it moves to its new home on our new Music Helps training platform. Migrating the course to our own platform means that we can now ensure every step of the learning journey, from signing up, viewing subtitles, to submitting surveys, will be fully translated across all three available languages: Hindi, Telugu, and English.

This has been a significant project, made possible only by the generosity and expertise of our volunteer contributors! Through the power of social media, we were fortunate to connect with Debashree Dasgupta, Music Practitioner & Researcher for Education, Health and Society, based in Mumbai.

We are incredibly grateful to Debashree for dedicating hours of her time to thoughtfully review the entire Hindi course subtitling and website content. With this strengthened platform, Debashree shares our hope that Music Helps will continue to reach a greater number of caregivers and to strengthen dementia care across India:

“As part of the linguistic and cultural review for the English-to-Hindi translations, I was struck by how thoughtfully this course was built - precise, context-specific, and easy to understand, with a team that made the whole process smooth and collaborative. I deeply appreciate the thoughtfulness behind translating it into Hindi and Telugu, a huge step, and one of the first of its kind, that will carry this course from the metro cities to the villages.

Drawing on my own work in music therapy with people living with dementia, it also affirmed core principles I hold dear: autonomy, listening, patience, validation, with music based techniques. I believe this course will certainly open perspectives and can become a strong, evidence-based adjunct to dementia care in India, almost like a music therapy first aid, simple enough for any caregiver to use.”

Our thanks to Nick at Southbrae Digital who has skilfully brought the multi-lingual platform together.

Please watch this space for news of our official launch very soon…!

Did you know that 96% of Music Helps UK graduates said they felt their personal experience was represented in the course?

This reflects the care and attention at the heart of Music Helps UK - a course built around the real lives of carers supporting people living with dementia, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Music Helps UK is a free, modern and online course professionally crafted to provide dementia carers with the necessary tools and confidence to use music for quality, person-centred dementia care.
