Borne Borne is a medical research charity with the mission of preventing premature birth, everywhere and forever. Charity no: 1167073

Every year, 15 million babies are born too soon. 1 million of them do not survive. Borne is a medical research charity with the mission of preventing premature birth and improving outcomes for mothers and babies, by investing in groundbreaking research to find answers, improve care, and nurture talent in this underfunded and overlooked area of research.

Across oceans, deserts, mountains and finish lines... 🏅

For the past 10 years, incredible supporters, ambassadors and patrons have pushed themselves to extraordinary limits in support of Borne's mission to end premature birth. They've trekked across the Arctic, set Guinness World Records on Mount Everest, completed Coast to Coast challenges in Costa Rica, run marathons in Tokyo and beyond, cycled hundreds of miles, and taken on countless personal challenges along the way.

Every mile travelled, every summit reached and every finish line crossed has helped fund vital research into pregnancy and premature birth. 🩵

As we celebrate 10 years of Borne, we're reflecting on the remarkable dedication, determination and generosity of everyone who has chosen to challenge themselves to create a better future for babies and families.

To every person who has run, walked, climbed, cycled, swum, trekked, fundraised and supported us over the last decade: thank you.

For many women who experience premature birth, there’s still no clear explanation why.

New Borne-funded research from Dr Antonia Cuff at Imperial College London is helping us better understand the role the immune system may play in pregnancy, labour, and preterm birth.

By studying specialised immune cells called ILC3s, researchers uncovered important insights into how the womb repairs itself and why conditions like endometriosis may increase the risk of premature birth.

This kind of research brings us closer to earlier prediction, better treatments, and ultimately helping more babies be born healthy and at the right time.

Because before we can prevent premature birth, we need to understand it.

Some stories stay with you long after you’ve read them 🩵

For Dr Gemma Ambrose, becoming a mother at just 24 weeks meant entering a world no parent ever expects; one filled with fear, uncertainty, and the fight to keep her babies alive.

Her story is a powerful reminder that premature birth can happen to anyone, even those who understand medicine and healthcare firsthand. Behind every statistic is a family navigating trauma, resilience, and hope in ways that are often unseen.

At Borne, we fund vital research to better understand premature birth and help create safer pregnancies and healthier beginnings for more families.

Thank you to Gemma for sharing her journey so openly. 💜

Premature birth is a global challenge, and solving it requires global collaboration.

At Borne, we are bringing together scientists, clinicians, researchers, and institutions from around the world to advance our understanding of pregnancy and help prevent premature birth.
Because the biggest breakthroughs rarely happen in isolation. They happen when knowledge, expertise, and determination come together.

From funding projects across multiple countries to creating spaces for world-leading experts to collaborate, this work is helping move research forward for mothers and babies everywhere.

We often talk about funding research, but what does “improving treatments” actually mean?

Alongside building scientific understanding of pregnancy and premature birth, Borne also funds research focused on something urgently needed right now: finding safe and effective ways to delay labour and improve outcomes for babies born too soon.

Because even a small amount of extra time in the womb can make a life-changing difference to a baby’s development, survival, and long-term health.

That means supporting studies exploring new medicines, therapies, and interventions that could safely prolong pregnancy, reduce complications, and give families a safer start.

While there is still so much we don’t know about premature birth, we also know families need progress today, not just in the future.

Every breakthrough in treatment brings us one step closer to changing outcomes for babies and their families.
